Welcome Letter to the Au Pair
Dear Au Pair, Welcome to our family!
We are looking forward to welcoming you to our home and to the United States! This will be our second experience with an au pair and we cannot wait to go on this journey again. Our first au pair truly became a 5th member of our family. We had so much fun seeing her make friends and explore so many cultural experiences in the US and hope you will do the same. Likewise, we loved learning about another culture over the last year.
Let us introduce ourselves. We are the family. We live in Puyallup, WA. Washington is located in the Pacific Northwest, on the top left corner of the United States. Puyallup is a city in WA with many nearby things to do. We live in a suburb part of the city. We are 5 minutes from the downtown part of the city, where you will find lots of restaurants, parks, the library, a shopping mall, movie theater and so much more. We are also an hour south of Seattle, and 20 minutes away from Tacoma.
My name is Amy and my husband is Hans. Our children are Grant, who will be 4 years old and Carter, age 6. Grant loves to laugh and play. He is a sweet boy who everyone falls in love with because of his charming smile. Everything is a new and exciting experience for him and he will talk your ear off if you let him. Carter is a very active little boy. He loves building legos and being outside. He takes some time to open up and is reserved at first, we call him our quiet observer. But once he feels comfortable he is very active and fun. Most importantly, they are happy and loving children. Last but no least, is our dog Nora. She is a mini golden retriever, she is always seeking attention and loves pets and snuggles.
Hans works as a principal at a local middle school, he works a normal Monday - Friday, with occasional evening events. I am a nurse at a nearby hospital. I work nights on a rotating schedule. I work 7pm-7am 2-3 nights a week. Hans leaves the house at 6am and gets home around 5pm. I leave around 6:30pm and get home around 8am in the morning, most of your care hours are while I am sleeping. Carter is in Kindergarten 5 days a week, Grant is in Preschool 3 days a week. We do sign him up for the occasional toddler gym, swim lessons, music and art classes for activities while Carter is in school. Most of your work days will include getting the kids up and making breakfast, taking Carter to school and picking them up, coming home and preparing lunch and then getting Grant down for a nap.
You will have your own car to use to make getting around a little bit easier for you. Hans and I enjoy going out to dinner once or twice a month. This is our way of spending some quiet time together. We would need you to take care of the children on a Friday or Saturday night once in a while. We try and make weekend’s family time. We might go to the park, a movie or out to eat. You are always welcome to join us. That will be up to you. We know you will have things you will want to do in your free time and only have one year in America to do them all.
Our ideal au pair is someone who will love and care for our children as if they are her own. We work hard to make a safe space where our au pair feels comfortable bringing any concerns to us. Never hesitate to come to us if you need to ask a question or you need our help in some way. We are also looking for someone who is flexible and can adjust to the events life throws your way. Flexibility goes both ways and we will also work to make adjustments. Well, I hope this gave you an idea of what our family is like and how excited we are for you to be a part of it during your year in America. We will do our very best to make you feel like part of the family!
