Welcome Letter to the Au Pair

Hello!! We are a relaxed and friendly British Australian family. Living on the German/Swiss border near Basel. We are an experienced host family.

August 2020: We are looking for an EU au pair, to start ideally from mid september 2020, but a later start is still OK. We would like someone who can stay until Summer 2021.
(Due to the corona crisis and travel restrictions, we our previously arranged au pair cannot come to us, which is why we are looking with such short notice.)

We are interested in and welcoming of different cultures, habits and languages. We have hosted 3 au pairs in the past few years and are still in touch with all of them.

It is essential that you can speak conversational english. It is also helpful if you can speak some basic german to help with homework or communicate in the community. We speak only english at home but can also speak conversational german.

Job Description

YOUR WORKING ACTIVITIES
(Pocket money and other money matters are as per the Germany guidelines.)

Here are some examples of what you might do, but every day will be different. Some days will be long and others short. We will try our best to work with your language lesson schedules, or even your social plans!
- looking after the children alone whilst parents attend appointments or are at work.
- Take the children to music class/ballet/sports.
- playing with the children at home.
- Help give the children breakfast, get them dressed and take them to kindergarten.
- arrange play dates with the children's friends. In english or german. Take and collect for these playdates, or host a child's friend at our house.
- taking the children on visits to parks, zoo, museums, cafes etc
- preparing food for the children, supervising their bath and bedtime.
- changing nappies, dressing, toileting the children and doing their hair.
- cooking simple food for the children such as toast or pasta. Preparing snacks and packed lunches.
- helping with the dishwasher, doing children's laundry, tidying toys, setting and clearing the table, cleaning up after meal preparation. (You do not have to do general house cleaning!). Often you need to supervise or help the older children to do these things with you (age appropriate chores).
- helping with homework (german).
- looking after the children for a longer period of time, or at short notice, if parents are ill. Likewise, looking after an ill child at short notice if parents must work or similar.
- if you have a driving licence, you could drive the children short distances, eg 10-20 minutes, to various activities.
On weekdays, school starts at 0800. Miss 8 walks to school and leaves the house about 0740. The other children are taken to kindergarten, it is only a 200m walk around the corner. The children are home for lunch and the afternoon. In the afternoons there are activities such as homework, piano lesson, ballet, swimming, playdates, kids doing their chores, or relaxing at home.
Dennis is usually home from work around 1900.
Fiona has varied and flexible working hours.
Dinner is around 1800 and the children have a bath or shower afterwards.
The children usually go to bed at 1930/2000. They rarely nap during the day.

YOUR WORKING HOURS
We hope that you can be flexible, occasionally helping mornings, but mostly in the afternoons. Occasionally weekend or evening help would be great, but mostly you will be free on the weekends and evenings.

LANGUAGE
We speak English at home, but you would have the opportunity to learn german through a nearby language school and practise with the "locals" and our friends. You could also attend english lessons, should you prefer.
