Welcome Letter to the Au Pair

!THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR INTEREST IN OUR FAMILY
PLEASE DO NOT SEND NEW REQUESTS FOR 2023 ANYMORE.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING!

Dear future au pair

We are a friendly, warm, welcoming family. We have one gorgeous, happy little boy, 2 years old, who is an absolute delight. Our little one is a lovely, curious, clever and fun bundle of energy and you can have lots of fun playing together. He loves to play in nature, he likes to build castles in the sand, he loves climbing, he plays in the water and on playgrounds and he particularly likes animals. Above that, you need to know he is on one hand a sensitive and on the other a strong-willed boy and NOTHING works with pressure. So you have to be patient and empathic but also consequent. We use the word "NO" very seldom, instead we prefer to explain to him WHY something is not possible. In our educational style we are guided a little by the idea of Maria Montessori. Montessori is a method of education that is based on self-directed activity, hands-on learning and collaborative play. We accompany our child whenever possible in a needs-oriented manner, even if this can be very strenuous in some situations, we always give our best and attach importance to non-violent communication (NVC from M.B. Rosenberg). Nonviolent communication' is a model of communication that promotes understanding and rapprochement.

Both my partner and I are busy in our jobs 4 days a week so we need some help with looking after our son. We are looking for an au pair who has had experience, a non-smoker who is reliable and loving, flexible and trustworthy. The most important thing for us is that you have a high sense of responsibility and take good care of our son when you are on your own – and that you are open to get to know a new culture and integrate into our family. We don’t offer accommodation where you just stay overnight and are here to work like a Nanny does, so we don’t want you to spend the night away during the week. We are looking for an au pair which wants to integrate into the family, is looking for a new experience and hopefully makes friendship for life. We love to travel, so it would be nice to stay in touch after your au pair time and maybe visit you and your family in your home country one day. You are accepted as a part of our family and always treated with respect. That is what we expect in return.

We live in a suburb, in the middle of Switzerland, very close to Aarau. So you have the amanity of both the nature side and the virtues of a big city. Aarau is a beautiful city with many great events such as carnival, horse races, Thai festival, open-air theatre, autumn fair, lantern parade, jazz and music festivals, May parade, a city run and small concerts. There is a pottery and various courses for handicrafts. Whilst remaining close to the train station of Aarau we benefit from good means of transport. Going to the center of Zurich, Basel or Berne takes around 30/40 min by train. The Airport is located around 40 mins were we will pick up and drop off if needed. We are searching for a minimum period of 3 months (extension optional). You have 2-3 days off each week of which normally 2 days in the weekend.

The regulations of our country: For persons from the EU-8 countries the age limit is 17 - 30 years. The age of an aupair from third countries (world) must be between 18 - 25 years. The au pair may not have German as mother tongue.

The job involves childcare and some light housework (like vacuuming, cleaning the kitchen, tidying up after the kid, doing the laundry for the kid, helping with the food shopping and preparing meals).

The main duties include:
- Living with us as a family member (we are only interested in a live-in Au pair)
- Looking after our son when we are busy at the office or homeoffice (mostly Monday-Thursday), preparing meals for him, having fun with him indoors and outdoors, visiting the zoo and the playground, eating lunch together, tiding up after him, join with him the children gynmastic or taking him for a walk, read books, painting pictures, kneading farm animals, tell stories, sing German or English rhymes and help him to improve his communicative and motoric skills - and most important: pay attention with a big sense of responsibility!
- If he is taking a nap after lunch there is some daily light housework to do.

We expect a First Aid training or that you are willing to made a practical First Aid course. We can’t wait to hear from the one who would like to join our family as a part of it. We expecting to have you here with us living with the family during the week. We'll take the time to familiarize you with everything and would love to show you our beautiful Switzerland and discover new things together during excursions in our spare time.sions.

Family Description

We are a German, Swiss-German (and English) speaking family living in the area of Aarau (Switzerland). Michael is an Austrian who moved to Switzerland just in 2015, so staying in our family could be a value to au pairs who learn High-German or Swiss-Germann and need to improve it with native speakers and wants to learn more about Swiss culture but are also interested to travel to Austria from time to time for a long weekend (when the Corona situation allows it).

Michael loves winter sports and plays ice hockey in a team nearby. Some times we play tennis together but you have to know I am an absolutely beginner and Michael is a pro :-), so its more for fun and the last year we had no time for it. When I have time I love to be creative, whether it's crafting, baking or even online for the internet. I love to stroll through the city, have a coffee or go to flea markets. Before corona came along, we loved to travel and always visited new cities as a couple. We love to discover hotspots together but also to find the secret places that not everyone knows yet.

An affectionate, consistent education is important for us. We are looking for a trustworthy, patiently, kind, empathic, flexible and creative au pair who is fully involved in child education and like to be a part of our family. Maybe you are musical and bring music closer to our child or you love nature like we do. In any case you should not be a couch potato ;-). You have to be a good English speaker or you have a good knowledge of the German language, as we raising our boy maximally 3-lingual (High German, Swiss German, English). The idea of the au-pair stay is that you can build up or improve your German language skills during the time with us, in the beginning we can of course also exchange in English to ensure the communication, after you have started the German language class we will start speaking German together more and more.

I have had experience as an au pair in my twenties and as a couple we travelled often to foreign countries, so we know about the feelings when you start living with a new family far away from home and friends and we will of course respect your privacy and that you maybe need some time for yourself when you are off. We know that every person is different an needs different things. Therefore I have always time for a chat on my days off or after work. You are also welcome to join our family life on our/your days off, where we often go out for walks, hiking, swimming in lakes, or visiting our family in Austria from time to time (when the Corona situation allows it). But about this, we need you as an assistance to bring more flexibility and breathing space into our family life. We believe that every problem can be fixed by discussion. We will welcome you as a family member and except the same from you. We would like to give our son the opportunity to have a big sister as most of our family lives in Germany and Austria.

We will do sightseeing together and experiencing the local cultural, that will expose you to local art, music, cuisine, architecture … . In each of these creative disciplines you may come across new approaches or elements that you bring home with you; maybe it’s a certain combination of ingredients that you add to your cooking or a new touch you adopt for your own home’s design – in return we look forward to getting to know your culture.

If you speak with your family via videocall, we give you of course as much privacy as you need, but we are also happy if we can say hello from time to time and exchange a few words :). A good relationship with each other is very important to us and we would be happy to make a lifelong friendship and to keep in touch in the future. Our son is used to videtelefonie and has regular contact with relatives abroad. Apart from the videtelefonie he is now and then allowed to watch a video on the handy that we have recorded of him and he loves to watch the "Hintertuxer Almabtrieb 2020" on Youtube, while the cows walk back from the alp to the stables in the village when the winter is coming. He may not use other media, no television, laptop or tablet and we also do not like taking selfies with filters as available for example in Snapchat. He is still too small to understand what is happening on the screen.
