Welcome Letter to the Au Pair

Welcome to our home—and to this new chapter of shared learning, care, and exploration. We are so excited to welcome you not just as an au pair and tutor, but as a meaningful part of our family and everyday life.

I work in the field of human rights and research, which means our household is full of curiosity, questions, books, and conversation. My son is a bright, funny, and loving child who thrives on discovery, play, and thoughtful attention. I believe this experience will be deeply enriching for all of us—not just in terms of language learning and cultural exchange, but in the simple, meaningful rhythm of daily life.

Our home is one of warmth, respect, and care. We value calm communication, shared meals, structure with flexibility, and creating a safe space where everyone can feel at ease. While your main role will be language immersion and caring for my son, you will also have your own private space, time for rest, and opportunities to explore our community.

Whether we are in our current home just outside Washington, D.C., or temporarily relocated to Ghana, I’m committed to making sure you feel supported, welcomed, and valued throughout your time with us.

We’re so glad you’re here, and we look forward to growing and learning together.

Job Description: Mandarin-Speaking Au Pair

Overview

We are seeking a warm, responsible, and nurturing Mandarin-speaking au pair to join our home and support the emotional, developmental, and linguistic growth of a young child through immersive Mandarin language exposure.

Primary Goal

To provide full-time Mandarin language immersion in a caring, play-based environment that supports early bilingualism.

Key Responsibilities

Engage the child exclusively in spoken Mandarin, using everyday conversation, play, and storytelling as immersive teaching tools.
Support morning and evening routines (dressing, meals, bedtime) while maintaining a Mandarin-only language environment.
Plan and participate in age-appropriate activities such as arts, music, outdoor play, reading, and imaginative games—all in Mandarin.
Attend local play spaces, libraries, and activities where Mandarin can continue to be integrated in real-world settings.
Light meal prep and tidying related to the child’s daily routine.
Serve as a cultural ambassador, bringing warmth and understanding of Chinese traditions, holidays, and values into our home.

Ideal Candidate

Native or fluent Mandarin speaker
Loving, patient, creative, and highly communicative
Experience with young children preferred
Interest in cross-cultural exchange and child development
Willing to live as part of a small, inclusive, family-centered household

Job Description: Mandarin-Speaking Live-In Tutor

Overview

We are looking for a dedicated and engaging live-in Mandarin tutor to design and implement a structured, developmentally appropriate Mandarin language learning plan for a young learner, focusing on both spoken fluency and pre-literacy skills.

Primary Goal

To build a strong foundation in Mandarin as a second language through formal and informal learning experiences tailored to a young child.

Key Responsibilities

Design and facilitate daily language lessons, games, and interactive learning sessions aligned with the child’s age, interests, and attention span.
Provide focused instruction in pronunciation, vocabulary acquisition, and sentence structure through songs, rhymes, stories, and play.
Introduce Mandarin characters and simple reading readiness activities through drawing, visual cues, and repetition.
Track language progress and adapt strategies to meet evolving developmental needs.
Coordinate learning with the au pair or caregiver to ensure a seamless full-day immersion.
Introduce Chinese books, music, media, and cultural practices to enrich language and cultural literacy.

Ideal Candidate

Native Mandarin speaker with experience teaching young children or second-language learners
Creative, patient, organized, and responsive to developmental cues
Background in early childhood education, linguistics, or tutoring a plus
