Welcome Letter to the Au Pair

We are a family with three children who go to school each day. Our 13 (girl) and 11 (boy) year olds are independent and are busy with sports each evening. Our youngest (girl) is five years old. We need someone who can take her to/from school each day and play with her in the evenings after her daycare is finished (pickup is between 5:30 and 6 pm). We also need help with light housework. You will have your days free while the kids are at school (approx 9 am to 5 pm would be free time each day) and weekends free. We live in a great area, 5 min walk to the subway so it's a great location to explore the city of Toronto. We have a lake house that we like to go to in the summer and we would love you to come with us there too. We do boating, swimming, hot tub, sauna and hiking there.

We have a golden retriever dog who is very kind and loving.

We have a lake house in Muskoka (2.5 hours north of Toronto) which is where we spend our summers and Christmas holidays/Easter holidays/Thanksgiving). It is beautiful and we have several boats and watersport activities to enjoy. There is a provincial park (Bigwin provincial park) behind our property so we go on hikes there.

Job Description

The biggest need is in the evenings. Tenley (5 year old) needs to get picked up at her afterschool daycare by 6 pm. Usually between 5:30 and 6. It is a 20 minute walk from our house. You can take the subway/bus there but I usually find it's much easier to walk. Your primary job would be spending time with Tenley from 5:30 to 8:30 and making sure she's fed and put into her clothes for bed. If we are home we'll put her to bed. If we aren't (because we are driving the other kids to their sports) then you'll read her a story and put her to bed.

We have a cleaning person who comes once a week but we need help with keeping the house tidy. Although we are trying to teach the kids to clean up after themselves, they are busy and not perfect. Some examples of additional home management responsibilities that you would help with include putting dishes in the dishwasher, or putting toys away, make food for Tenley to eat, write groceries that we need on the grocery list for me to order.

If you drive then it would be a big help for you to help with driving the older kids to their sports on occasion.

In the mornings we wake up around 6:30 or 7. Often I take Tenley to her before school care (dropoff between 7:30 - 8:30) and it would be great if you could take her there sometimes as well. I do not expect you to do this everyday but you might enjoy waking up, going for a nice 20 min walk and then have the rest of the days free.

So minimum expectation is evening support.

This will change in the summer months. In July and August we go to our lake house. We have two trips planned away in July so those two weeks you will be free to do whatever you want and you can remain in the city (or do some traveling yourself). But for the other two weeks in July and in August we would expect you to be at our lake house with us and take care of Tenley from 9 to 5 pm each day. This probably won't feel like work! You will be swimming in the lake, playing on the dock, going for boat rides or walks along the road to pick blackberries.

It would be helpful if you have your drivers license and feel comfortable driving in the city.

Accommodation

We just renovated our house. So it is brand new. You will have your own bedroom on the bottom (basement) floor which has its own private bathroom with a bathtub/shower. The bathroom has a window and the bedroom has a window. We renovated the basement 10 years ago so it is nice and modern. The ceilings are high and the windows are bright so it doesn't feel like a basement.

The house is three stories tall with 4 other bedrooms. Each child has their own room and bathroom (Delaney and Tenley share theirs). The main floor has a large open kitchen, family room, dining room and living room area.

I think the best part about where our houseis that it's just a few hundred yards from the main street in Toronto (Yonge St). But we are in a neighbourhood with lots of trees and quiet streets. So we are close to the stops and restaurants but our neighbourhood feels quiet and relaxing.

Toronto is very multicultural. It is called a city of neighbourhoods so you will have fun exploring all the neighbourhoods. We have four seasons so it is hot in the summer and snowy in the winter.
