Welcome Letter to the Au Pair

Dear Future Au Pair,

We’re so pleased you’re considering becoming a part of our family!

Let us introduce ourselves. We’re Sian (42) and David (52), and we live in a peaceful town in the South East of England with our 12-year-old daughter, Mya, and our two much-loved pets — Fred, our friendly bichon frise, and Bob, our very elderly but independent cat.

We’re a calm, kind family who enjoys a relaxed home life. Our house is comfortable, with a garden, easy access to walking routes and local parks, and excellent transport links to London (just 45 minutes by train) and several other towns within 15–20 minutes’ drive. You’ll have your own bedroom and bathroom, and there’s also a separate study space you’re welcome to use if you’re studying or simply want a quiet moment to yourself. We live in a safe, friendly neighbourhood, and there are plenty of language schools and local groups where you can meet others and feel at home.

Mya is a creative soul who loves art and being outdoors. She’s gentle, thoughtful, and easy to get along with. We’d love for you to support her in the mornings by helping her get ready and driving her to school, which is about 20 minutes away. For this reason, a full driving licence is essential.

Fred, our dog, is an important part of our day-to-day life. He’s 10 now and doesn’t like being alone, so a key part of your role will be keeping him company during the day, giving him short walks, and helping him feel settled while we’re working. He’s very easy-going and just enjoys having someone nearby.

We both work regular hours — I sometimes work from home in the evenings — and our home life is fairly quiet. We eat meals together most evenings and would love to include you if you’d like. Mya’s nan (my mum) lives nearby and visits often — she’s a big part of our family and would welcome you just as warmly.

We’re not religious, but we’re open-minded and happy to welcome someone of any faith or background. What matters most to us is that you’re calm, caring, and respectful — someone who fits naturally into our peaceful and friendly home.

Job Description

We’d ideally like your help for 20–25 hours a week, mostly during weekday mornings and early afternoons. Evenings and weekends would be your own, aside from perhaps one evening a month. You’d also help with a few light duties around the house — nothing heavy or overwhelming — just part of keeping things running smoothly.

We’re looking for someone who can stay for 6–12 months, ideally. We hope this will be more than just a job — that it will be a memorable and positive experience for you, and that you’ll feel at home with us while you’re here. You’ll have plenty of time to explore, make friends, attend language classes, or enjoy local sights. If needed, we can arrange access to a car.
