Sweden is one of the most important countries of the whole Scandinavia, namely the fifth biggest country in Europe. If you intend to spend your next months as an Au Pair in Sweden, maybe you may want to learn some things about your possible new city, and what you´ll be able to visit once there.
Sweden is not only the place where IKEA was invented, but it has a lot to offer, from big and inspiring cities, to the most authentic countryside. So pack your things, and let´s discover this surprising country together!
Au Pair in Stockholm
Stockholm is the perfect city for an Au Pair experience, it is one of the most beautiful capitals in the whole Europe, and you will not regret it for sure. It is called the Venice of the North, because it lays on a number of peninsulas and islands at the outflow of the Lake Mälar.
The city is really dynamic and with a lot of things to do and to visit, from world class museums and galleries till magnificent parklands. In particular, the Old Town represents the most famous part of the city and maybe the first stop for a tourist, however as an Au Pair in Stockholm you will have the chance to fully enjoy its beautiful streets, and get to know even the smallest shops or interesting places that tourists may leave behind.
Moreover, as we do every year in Germany, the Christmas Market, called Julmarknad, is very popular, and there you can easily buy gifts and sweets for your (host) family for when you come back home for Christmas holidays.
Lastly, Stockholm is a stimulating city even for the ones interested in architecture: from the baroque Royal Palace, to more modern buildings like the Moderna Museet or the Östermalm, architecture-lovers can find a lot of topics for study and discussion.
Au Pair in Malmö
Malmö is the third largest city in Sweden, situated in the south coast of the country. This city can be a perfect Au Pair destination, as it represents a meeting point between two different countries, Sweden and Denmark.
In fact, Malmö is directly connected, through the incredible Øresund Bridge, to the city of Copenhagen, by enhancing an atmosphere and a multicultural environment that will let you discover not only one, but two different Scandinavian cultures.
However, Malmö itself can be a very interesting city to spend your next months: it hosts many examples of Scandinavian architecture, such as Malmöhus Castle and the Stortorget square, and European masterpieces, like the Turning Torso Tower of Santiago Calatrava, as well as big green woods and parks, such as the Folkets Park, known for being the oldest public park in the world.
However the city has also a lot of nightlife and festivals to offer, in fact the University, with over than 24,000 students, makes Malmö a city with a lot of nightlife and young people, while in summer events such as the Malmöfestivalen attract people from all over the world.
Au Pair in Göteborg
Göteborg is the second largest city in Sweden, and the fifth in the whole Scandinavia.
It is a city full of culture, nature, and different types of activities. It is situated on the west coast of the country, facing the Danish peninsula, born (as many of the Scandinavian cities) as a fishing town.
To do an Au Pair experience in Göteborg may be recommendable for many reasons, one of the most important ones is to travel. In fact, Göteborg is located exactly in the middle of three of the main capitals of Scandinavia - Stockholm, Copenhagen and Oslo.
From there you can easily have the chance to discover three different countries, and get an overview on the whole Scandinavia.
However, if you prefer to concentrate your efforts in this little Swedish pearl, it is important for you to know that, despite the many attractions of the city, such as the Konstmuseum or the Liseberg Amusement Park, Göteborg is perfect for people who love nature.
In fact, nature-lovers may decide to stroll around the Slottsskogen, a mini-zoo with all kind of animals in their natural state, sail off to the Southern Archipelago, or visit the Gothenburg Botanical Garden.
Au Pair in Uppsala
The last Swedish city that we would like to recommend you is Uppsala. Probably you´ve never heard about it, but it is actually the fourth biggest city in Sweden.
This city is a good alternative if you cannot find a Host Family in Stockholm, since the two cities are distant only 70 km.
For this reasons, if you will become an Au Pair in Uppsala, take a couple of notes. Uppsala is a very young and easy-going city, home of the oldest and most important university of the whole Scandinavia. Its library is the largest in Sweden, and houses more than 5,000,000 volumes and 30,000 manuscripts.
Furthermore, the baroque Cathedral and the Uppsala Castle are two more attractions that you can enjoy in this little city.
However, there is one particular place to visit absolutely, especially if you´re a nature-lover: BIOTOPIA. It is a biological interactive museum where you can discover all the wild landscapes of Uppland, and many other things about the history of Uppsala from an environmental perspective. And last but not least, this unique museum is completely free entry!
