Au Pair in England/UK: duties

What is an Au Pair expected to do? What kind of duties should an Au Pair perform? Those are probably the most frequent questions asked by both Au Pairs and Host Families in order to better understand the meaning of the program. 

As an Au Pair, the family will mostly expect you to look after their children whenever they are not at home and do some basic tasks related to childcare. 

Some families may ask you to do some light housework or look after pets, but this is something you have to arrange with your specific host family. What can an Au Pair do?

Although your responsibilities as an Au Pair may vary depending on your Host Family's needs, the following are the main duties you should expect to be asked for:

  • Play with the children
  • Take / pick up the children from school or any other activity
  • Help the children to get dressed
  • Help the children with their homework
  • Prepare light meals for the children
  • Keep both the Au Pair's and the children's room tidy
  • Help with light housework (ironing, vacuuming, laundry)
  • Cook some light meals for the kids

What should an Au Pair NOT do?

  • Cook meals for the whole family
  • Look after someone else's children
  • Look after pets
  • Clean non-shared rooms
