Au Pair

DISCLAIMER: We've already found a aupair for 2023-2024.
We will be looking for a au-pair (2024-2025) starting from Jenuary 2024.
We'll edit this profile in the next months

Hi, we are a family who live in Bologna, the center and heart of the Emilia-Romagna region, in central-northern Italy.
We have two children who will be 3 and 1 years old next fall, a large house, and we both work.
We are looking for a person who can support us with our children and to a lesser extent in housework and we are ready to give support at best in your activities here in Italy.
We believe in cultural exchange and diversity, and we will consider you part of our family as long as you’ll stay with us (and even after... we are Italians!). If/when you want you will have the opportunity to meet and hang out with our friends and our families, to travel with us and to experience the life of an Italian family from within, with its pros and cons :D. We are also curious to explore your country's culture, its traditions and everything about your family!
We would like you to speak in English to our children. We have a basic English knowledge: Raffaela is very rusty while I have good familiarity with it. If you speak Italian, French or Spanish it’d be better, but we will manage it anyway!

Our expectations regarding this experience can be summarized in three points.
The first one concerns the fact that, working full-time and having distant families, we need a hand with children and to a lesser extent at home. Attending schools, sickness and after-school care are currently leaving us no room for anything else. We hope Edoardo will be able to attend regular activities after school, like sport introduction or music. We ask for your support here.
In principle this should consist, indicatively and with flexibility, (we are not a rigid family) in:
- Being with one or both children (in the second case with one of us present) from Monday to Friday, maximum from 4 to 8 pm. This includes possibly taking them to activities, even driving (we have two cars)
- Every now and then, in case of need and considering your activities, dressing the children and/or taking them to school (maximum half an hour between going and coming back), around 8-9 am
- In case of illness of the children, be available 4-5 hours during the time slot in which we work (8-16) compatibly with your activities. In that case we would take care of the children in the afternoon, so you can have the time for your interests
- Feed them, if necessary, when you are with them/us (more Edoardo than Alessandro)
- Make them fall asleep, if necessary, when you are with them/us (more Edoardo than Alessandro)
- Cleaning/tidying your room and bathroom
- Small house cleaning and tidying up (except for the floors - we have robots)
- We will organize meals from day to day, in general we hope we can often have lunch/dinner together! In those cases, we’ll cook for you and would appreciate it if you could do the same for us…that’s part of the cultural exchange!
- Very exceptionally and by arrangement, weekend support.

The second point concerns communication in English. Given their age we would like to expose our children as much as possible to that language (Edoardo already watches cartoons in English), so we would like you to talk to them mainly in English. Raffaela and I both studied English, but we don't feel like risking speaking it with them. My understanding and fluency in English is fair/good, while Raffaela’s is rustier, but she always makes do when travelling. While we are not looking for a person who also speaks Italian, it would certainly be useful if you knew a minimum of it, or alternatively a similar and mutually understandable language (eg Spanish or French). Surely Italian will be spoken at home (but I'm eager to speak English to be honest), so it would be ideal to have at least the desire to learn it, in its basics! And you won't be able to avoid learning Italian sign language, so be ready! :D

The third point concerns cultural exchange. In some ways I think it’s the most important point, although perhaps the least "concrete". As a family we strongly believe in cultures comparison and in the enrichment that derives from it. So, we invite you to share with us everything coming from your people of origin and from your family: songs, traditions, food, clothes, stories, habits ... we are very curious about and we are ready to do the same too, if you want! You could even join us when we meet our families of origin (in Rome or Reggio), or on vacation!

Here are some simple rules of common living. We are open to discuss them with you:
- Smoking isn’t allowed inside the house: there is an ashtray on the balcony for this purpose (Raffaela smokes occasionally)
- No animals: we have nothing against animals per se, but we don’t have a garden and we don’t think it’d right form them and us to keep them inside all day or so. Also, we have little or no time for paying them the due attention and care
- No access (to the flat) to other people, except for exceptions to be agreed. We understand that it may be important to you, and if we didn't have children, it wouldn't be a problem. However, we feel the need to protect them in advance: as yet naïve parents we know even the best person in the world, if he has never had anything to do with children, can risk putting them in danger, and we want to avoid it
- My parents or Raffaela's family could stay with us occasionally for some days: in this case they’ll occupy the living room and there will potentially be a little more confusion, but there will be no impact on your rooms and your privacy will be protected
- After 11pm we expect little noise inside the flat (so as not to wake up the children): low voice, low volume TV/pc or headphones, try to avoid taking a shower after that hour etc...

We will be looking for a au-pair (2024-2025) starting from Jenuary 2024.

- Personal room, equipped with a container bed, bedside table, large wardrobe, desk - all recently purchased. Heating and air conditioning can be regulated depending on your needs.
- Personal bathroom including sink, toilet, bidet (yes, it's something you find everywhere in Italy :D), shower cubicle - all recently purchased. Although the bathroom is for your exclusive use, we need to have access to it because one of the floor cleaning robots is inside it
- Board
- Wifi (FTTH fiber)
- Monthly contribution to be agreed
- Support in your activities, to be agreed. You will be an integral part of our family, and, as a family, we help each other!

We live in the Fossolo district; we are about 15-25 minutes (by bus or bicycle) far from the historic center of Bologna. Train and bus stations are 30 minutes away by public transport, while the airport is a bit farther (45 minutes).
The neighborhood is mostly residential, indicated for families, and full of parks and services. Our house is located 50 meters from the Via Emilia (the road built by the Romans that runs through the whole region, giving it its name, and which cuts Bologna in two) giving access to some shops and clubs. In front of our house there is a small, well-stocked shopping center, which includes (among others): supermarket, pharmacy, post office, laundry, hairdresser, tobacconist.

Our house is located on the first floor of a seven-storey building, in a complex of two buildings. The buildings, equipped with a lift, have a small common garden, and are surrounded on two sides by a line of old pine trees. You can easily park on the street. The house consists of a kitchen, a living room, three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a large balcony, hallway and closet. Heating and cooling are adjustable in each room. In the basement there is a garage where you can leave bicycles or others in safety.

Emilia-Romagna region is famous not only for its history and its monuments (like most Italian cities) but for traditional foods (e.g. lasagne, tortellini, balsamic vinegar, Parmigiano Reggiano), engines (e.g. Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, Ducati), and children's education (Reggio Children). In summer the beaches of the Romagna Riviera, about an hour and a half away by train, are filled with tourists; the area is one of the most popular places in Italy for both families and young people looking for some fun. Emilia Romagna is one of the wealthiest in Italy, and has historically paid particular attention to social and civil issues, to the world of volunteering, to the less well-off, and to the world of culture.

Bologna, the capital of the Emilia-Romagna region, was founded by the Romans and its name in Latin means "fortified place". He has a jovial, open and pleasure-loving character. Her nicknames are "La Dotta", "La Grassa" and "La Rossa" (The Learned, The Fatty and The Red).

"Dotta" derives from the fact that it houses the oldest university in the western world (dating back to 1088), which still today attracts students from all over Europe. Since immemorial time, the Alma Mater Studiorum has hosted the most illustrious figures of the Italian artistic and cultural panorama (Dante, Petrarca, Boccaccio, Pico della Mirandola, Leon Battista Alberti, Niccolò Copernico, Torquato Tasso…). Today, the University welcomes around 80,000 students every year, keeping the city socially and culturally active: taverns and arcades are full of students hanging out together. The center of university life is Via Zamboni, where there is also Bologna main Library, open to the public since 1756.

"Grassa" is due to the typical cuisine, rich in flavors and traditions. In fact, for the DOC Bolognese, eating good food is an absolute priority. Tortellini, mortadella, ragù, tenerina, tigelle are just some of the dishes that old shops and clubs offer, giving the Emilian capital the nickname of "city of food". The gastronomic tradition of Bologna is also closely linked to the University: the mixing of numerous students and professors of different nationalities enriched, over time, the gastronomic tradition, making necessary a good organization of the food supply.

"Rossa" is linked to the shades of red that characterize buildings, deriving from the use of the typical reddish bricks with which towers and palaces were built in the area during Middle Ages. Furthermore, there are more than 350 shades, between red and yellow, of plaster used on the houses and on the various buildings of the city. Its kilometer-long arcades (a UNESCO heritage site), its center, Piazza Maggiore, and its palaces (Palazzo Podestà, Palazzo D'Accursio, Palazzo re Enzo) all are red. Its many towers are red, a small part of those present in the Middle Ages (it is believed there were over 100). Red is also the color of socialism, which had particularly taken root in Bologna, especially during the period of the Resistance against Nazi-Fascism. Even today the link between students, workers and socialists is solid.

Bologna is one of the main (if not the main) Italian transport hubs. Located in the center of Northern Italy, it connects the main northern cities and at the same time serves as the main stop-over in the North-South transport. The motorway and railway network makes it an obligatory passage. Several Italian cities are therefore easily reachable by train from Bologna. The main ones are (the times indicated are for high-speed trains, about double for other standard trains):
- Milan: 1h
- Florence: 1h
- Venice: 2h
- Turin: 2,5h
- Rome: 2,5h
- Naples: 3,5h
Through some of these cities it’s then possible to continue towards France, Switzerland, and Slovenia, while the railway leading to Austria starts from the nearby city of Modena.
