My Au Pair Experience in Sweden – by Faith Kivuti
Becoming an Au Pair in Sweden has been one of the most life-changing decisions I’ve ever made. I came here from Kenya with curiosity, excitement, and a bit of nervousness. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I knew I wanted to grow, experience a new culture, and step outside my comfort zone and this journey gave me all that and more.
I live with a kind and welcoming host family and take care of two wonderful children, aged 4 and 2. A typical day for me starts with helping the children get ready in the morning. I prepare breakfast, dress them, and walk the older child to preschool. During the day, I stay with the younger one. We play, go for walks, read books, and sometimes do crafts or sing songs. It’s beautiful to see them grow and learn, and being part of that process has been so rewarding.
One of the best parts of being an Au Pair is cultural exchange. I’ve learned about Swedish traditions, holidays, and values. Celebrating Midsummer and Lucia was magical, and I even picked up some basic Swedish words. My host family included me in everything and made me feel like a true part of their family.
There were challenges too. At times, I felt homesick or overwhelmed, but I learned how to communicate better and manage my time. I realized how important it is to take care of your mental and emotional health, especially when living abroad.
To future Au Pairs, my advice is to be open-minded and flexible. Every family is different, and every child has their own personality. Communicate clearly and kindly. If you’re ever unsure about something, ask questions. It helps build trust with your host family.
Also, use your free time well. Explore the area, meet other Au Pairs, and experience the local culture. Some of my best memories are from small adventures like going to a lake, trying Swedish pastries, or having a cozy fika with friends.
Being an Au Pair isn’t just about childcare it’s about personal growth, discovering new perspectives, and building meaningful connections. I’m so grateful for this experience and would absolutely recommend it to anyone looking for an unforgettable cultural exchange.
