Verano 2023
Julie -USA- Atlanta
As a first time Au Pair, I was not sure what to expect during my one-month stay with Luis Julio and Patricia in a quaint town in Northern Spain called Baltanás. The family was very accommodating and allowed me to eat anything I wanted out of the fridge, and every evening, they invited me to come down to the bar. The boys were respectful and sweet, and during my free time, I would run and explore the town and the surrounding hills and countryside. I frequented the Bodegas, the wine cellars dug into the side of a hill and from that vantage point, I often watched the sunset and listened to the church bells gong the hour. I ran along the hills past acres of wheat and barley, and once, I even ran to a windmill, which was a really awesome because they are huge — much bigger than I imagined. With a population of under 1,600, town is picturesque and quaint and everyone knows everyone. For me as a writer, it was an ideal place to sit and observe and explore. And because I was staying with a local family, the tight-knit community embraced me in a way they wouldn’t have if I were just a tourist passing through.

Upon arriving, Luis Julio drove me to the boys’ piano recital where I met nearly half the town. Back at the house Patricia showed me the room where I would be staying. It included a private two large windows, plenty of storage space for my stay and a private bathroom with a shower and sink. The rest of the family stay on the bottom floor so it almost felt like a private suit.

My duties were fairly simple. I arrived on June 15th, 2023 during the last week of school before summer vacation. I was instructed to wake the boys at 9:00 give them breakfast and tidy up a little before walking them to school. Then, I could do as I wished before walking to get up the boys from school and serving them their lunch. I was never required to cook for them; Patricia or Luis Julio always had something prepared something. I was always welcome to eat with the family, and once I adjusted to their schedule, I ate all my meals with them and practiced Spanish as we conversed around the table. Then, I would teach the boys individual English lessons (one hour each). Telmo can carry a conversation in English, although he needs to work on his grammar and expanding his vocabulary. He is more advanced at speaking in English than he is at writing in English. On the other hand, Bertin understands many English words, but he needs more practice and instruction on English grammar and sentence structure before he will be able to hold an entire conversation. The boys’ personalties were very different and they learned in very different ways, but both were extremely intelligent and sweet. Both were a delight to work with. After school ended, the schedule changed only slightly. I would wake the boys at 10 (or at 9:30 if they had paddle practice), and we would do English lessons in the morning.

Each day after my duties, I would sit on the shaded patio reading or writing or practicing Spanish while I waited for the sun to cool. I have the boys lunch at around 2 pm, and at around 8:00 p.m., I would go for a run or a walk or join the family in whatever they were doing. Patricia always made sure to invite me to the pool or to the fields or to any place she was going. Once, during the week, I visited Valladolid, the city where Patricia works and where the famed author Cervantes was born. I also visited Palencia a few times and swam in the river with a woman I met in Baltanás. I had weekends off so I was free to travel to bigger cities by bus or to stay in town and tag along with Patricia and the boys or just do my own thing. I went to Madrid for an extended weekend and visited Barcelona the last weekend of my trip. The family was very supportive of my travel plans, but the key is to communicate so they can adjust as needed.

In Baltanás, there is a wine boutique that served cheese and tapas, and the owners were very conversational and told me some of the town’s history.

All in all, the experience was even better than I thought it would be, and I would do it again if I had the available time. Baltanás is an ideal setting for an artist or writer, providing both the setting and the quiet that compels one to create. If your’e hoping to immerse yourself in a different culture and way of life, this is a great opportunity.

Opis pracy

Verano 2019

29 July, 2020

My name is Nilesh Sharan and I am from India. I was working as an Au Pair at the house of Luis Julio Mate Rodriguez in Baltanás, Castilla y León for around 2 months, June-July 2020. It was my very first experience as Au pair and I must say that I could not have imagined a better host family to be part of. Both Luis Julio and Patricia were inexplicably kind to me and had me like a family member at their home. I enjoyed working with their kids, Telmo and Bertin. They are 6 and 4 years old respectively and they are very nice kids. Telmo, in particular, has a flair for learning languages. He could already communicate in English when I reached there and his growth during my time there was really good to see. Bertin, on the other hand, is still starting to learn but is very intelligent, though a little free willed. With him, it was more interactive, animated approach that kept his interest going as he is too free flowing to focus his attention on a real English lesson. All in all, both the kids are well behaved and listen to their parents when asked to. They do have a weak spot for computers and mobiles but which kid doesn’t these days? While I was there, I also had the good luck to interact with the ‘abuelos’; and they were really lovely people.

In terms of the place, Baltanás is a small scarcely populated village but the people there are very open and welcoming. Since the family owns a bar at the Plaza, which I used to visit quite often, I met a lot of people in the village and made some very good friends. The weekends at the village can be really fun as everybody gets together at the plaza and enjoys a good time. Luis Julio, the host father, runs the bar and he very generously offered me drinks. He is a very open minded and well travelled person and knows and respects other cultures and their idiosyncrasies while trying to impart his own cultural values. He helped me to learn many new Spanish terms and cultural intricacies for which I could never thank him enough. His wife, Patricia, is really caring, in every sense of the word. I could not pin point why I think so, but it was her overall approach towards me that makes me say it. She was always offering me food, daily use products or anything I might have needed. The house where we were is quite big and I had my own separate bedroom with bathroom, which I feel is a necessary for every Au pair. Sometimes you need your own space and they always respected that. I understand that as a host family, sometimes you do things because you have a contractual obligation but it was never the case with them. It was their true intent and kindness that touched my heart and I would never forget my stay with them. I never felt out of the family and their love towards me never seemed forced. I would always recommend them to any Au Pair and if possible, I would love to stay with them again.
