Lettre pour l'Au Pair

UPDATE! We are covered for now (we expect until September/October of 2026). Will be back perhaps next summer to connect with our next au pair!

============================

Hi! We are an American host family with three sweet kids, ages 5, 3, and 1 (but the oldest will be six in September). We have had 4 au pairs so far over the last four years.

We are a happy and fun-loving family. The kids can be very silly and always make us laugh. The grown-ups are very social and we love to have dinner parties (perhaps once/month or so) and spend time with friends. Most of our friends are from our church community, or other parents from our children's school. We live in a very beautiful suburban neighborhood with incredible views of the Rocky Mountains and the Denver city lights. There are lots of trails for hiking and biking right outside of our door, and all of the popular Colorado sports within driving distance (we provide a car for our au pairs).

We are looking for an au pair who is genuinely interested in becoming like a member of our family. We are also looking for someone who is calm and patient, because little kids, even good and sweet little kids, could be a handful! Rodney and I are fun and loving parents, and we play a lot with our children, and try to use silliness to diffuse tensions, but also, with his cancer, we are under a lot of stress. It helps to have an au pair who is kind, patient, and understanding, and very calm.

Our best match au pair is:

- A clear and direct communicator, friendly, no-drama. Family life, getting to know each other, and establishing how we live and work together will always require smoothing out rough spots. Someone who tells us, early and clearly, what they need from us, is great! It's hard when we're trying to guess why an au pair isn't happy.

- Positive and upbeat. The most frequent cause of problems with our au pairs is (surprise!) other au pairs! Whatsapp and social media groups in which au pairs complain about their host families and compare different perks have a tendency to sow discontent. Our au pairs have (thankfully) told us that we are much better than some other host families out there... but the truth is, no family is perfect. Every family will have different positives and different flaws. We are very open and honest about what is great about our family (loving, kind, fun, flexible, excellent perks, beautiful home & city), and what is not (3 little kids are hard work! And cancer is looming over us).

- Truly loves people! Especially our children. :) Someone caring and loyal, who sees us not just as employers, but as real people, a real family, with big hearts and hopes and dreams and challenges of our own. We care about our au pairs and want to see you have a wonderful experience here in the US, making friends, traveling and seeing places, all of that. And we want to be cared about in return.

- Very clean, tidy, and organized by nature. We are a tidy family, at least the adults! The kids, obviously, are always making messes. We are trying to teach them to clean up after themselves more, but they are very little. It helps us all if we have an au pair who is clean like us, who will see something on the floor or a mess on the counter and put it away because she feels better in a clean home. That way we all contribute.

We are very excited to welcome a new au pair to our home and to our country!

Description des tâches

Note: one child starts school mid-August, another starts Sep 2.

During the school year our au pair basically works from 8 AM to 5 PM, mostly with the baby. We will get the older kids ready for school and take them at eight, and then work until the end of the day. Our au pair usually picks up the older two kids from school, which is a five minute drive from our house. She brings them home, helps them with homework or a bath, and then put them down for a nap. Often all of the kids are napping during the afternoons, so the afternoon is pretty quiet. That is when our au pair will wash and fold the kids laundry, pick up toys, or clean their lunch mess.

The summer could be a little bit more! We find that one of the areas of difficulty in our household is that the children prefer the parents over the au pair when the parents are available, and of course, we both work from home. So it’s easier for the au pair if she can take the kids out of the house, which means that there’s a lot of driving involved, and it’s important for our au pair to have a drivers license and be a good driver. We make arrangements for things like summer camps, gymnastics, swimming lessons, or just visiting fun places like the zoo during the summer. We live in a really great neighborhood for kids. For example, the local public library has a three story times (with music, games, bubbles, etc.) for kids at 9 AM, 10 AM, and 11 AM, so it’s really easy just to take the kids to the library and let someone else entertain them for a while! The library also has a play area, and in fact, each of the different library locations has a different kind of play area. Ours is like a veterinary clinic where a little kids can pretend to be an animal doctor. It’s right next to a park that has a playground, a creek and two fountains that are designed for kids to play in. There are a lot of parks around with similar features.

In addition to things being easier if our au pair takes the kids out of the house, we also find that it’s easier if our au pair truly integrates as a member of the family, hanging out with us on evenings and weekends (not every single day, but regularly). Some au pairs prefer to spend that time alone or with friends, and we do understand that as well, but for little kids, it makes it more like they have to choose between their parents and the au pair, so it makes handoff in the morning a little more difficult. Someone who is genuinely interested in being part of our family and spending time with us will have an easier time with the children as well.

Logement de l'Au Pair

We have a very spacious, beautiful house. The family all sleeps upstairs and the au pair room is on the main floor with its own bathroom. Currently we are finishing out the basement into a wonderful play area, a gym with a sauna and shower and another bedroom with its own bathroom and walk-in closet. When it’s done, our au pair can choose that new bedroom if she prefers. The basement has windows on one side, and a large walkout patio and backyard with a swingset.
