After graduating I took care of two children in Sydney, Australia, 45-50 hours per week. The boy was 5 and the girl was 8 when I began living there. I prepared their lunch boxes, made breakfast and dropped them off at their school. I then did their laundry, grocery shopping, some tidying, clothes pick up and drop of at the dry-cleaning and cooking lunch. I then picked up the kids, drove them to activities, watched them participating competitions or visited playgrounds. At home I supervised them doing their homework, helped out whenever needed and did daily reading with the boy. Also both had to practice the piano and the girl additionally did the french horn. I don't have any musical skills, but we still managed it. Meanwhile I prepared dinner using hellofresh. Following the kids took their daily bath or shower and got their PJs' on. Most of the times the parents arrived some time between the kids practicing their instruments and getting their PJs' on. After preparing dinner and setting the table I usually went downstairs where my apartment was located. Sometimes I had dinner with the kids and accompanied them to bed and waited til they were asleep. One day I was alone with the kids overnights, so I slept on the same level in the guests' room. During the night the boy had a nightmare and came to my bed, asked to sleep next to me, because he was too afraid to sleep alone in his bed. This happened quite often, so he slept in his partens' bed on a regular basis. Well, I didn't get much sleep that night, because the whole time I was super scared to accidentally roll onto him. But honestly, this was also one of my best experiences I've ever made.
Another reason why I'd like to work as an Au-Pair/Nanny is, the focus on a smaller amount of children. In a kindergarden it's not meant to fully focus on one or two children. I'd like to focus on the whole development of one to three children and have a greater impact on their development, especially trying to ensure a positive self-perception and nurishing environment for the kids to grow.
