My name is Gwendolyn. I recently graduated from Cleveland State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology. Since August 1, 2023, I have been working as an Instructional Assistant at Springer School and Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, United States. It is a school for children with learning disabilities like dyscalculia and dyslexia. Many of our students are diagnosed with ADHD, but none have cognitive disabilities. It is a wonderful school and serves many families, some of whom come from far away to receive our gentle yet organized approach. Prior to Springer, I worked as a counselor in the Summer Treatment Program at the Cleveland Clinic for two summers. Our patients included children with ADHD and behavioral issues. The structure of this program taught me a great deal about how to help children no matter what was going on in their lives. Though I worked with a group of several children, I was focused on two specific kids. During this process, I developed a special bond with these children, which was very rewarding. So, naturally, I want to be an Au Pair because I love working with children.

Though I have a position working with children currently, I have always had a desire to go abroad. I attended a high school whose mission included showing its students the world. In eighth grade, I went to Andros Island to study its culture and the surrounding marine life. I also went to the Dominican Republic to study its culture and visit its schools. These travel experiences ignited my desire to see more. However, for the last 20 years, I have been focused on my studies and work, so I have been unable to fulfill my desire to see the world. Consequently, I am interested in this opportunity because it will take me abroad.

Families should host me because I am very hardworking and strive to be compassionate to others, which are important qualities in an Au Pair or Live-in Tutor. Additionally, I am very caring towards children, so I will be able to give their children the love and support that they need. I am also very amenable, which means I want to take care of their child in the way that they want me to care for their child. Moreover, I qualify for this position because I have significant experience working with children. The Summer Treatment Program at Cleveland Clinic provided me with a great deal of experience working with children, specifically with reducing negative behaviors and increasing positive behaviors. This summer program taught me how to correct a child’s behavior in an efficient, but gentle way. These skills are incredibly important when working as an Au Pair. Additionally, as I have worked as an instructional assistant, I can also help children with schoolwork and studies. Consequently, my work experience has prepared me for this job.
