My most applicable experiences are my 2 AmeriCorps terms.

My 1st term was as a Youth Enrichment Specialist for STEM subjects. I would rotate between The City of Dubuque’s different playgrounds that hosted the Summer Parks and Recreational Programs for all kids ages 6 – 14. I would prepare and present a STEM related activity or presentation at some point in the day and stay the day at the park to help facilitate the standard activities the Parks and Recreational program did.

When selecting my subjects, I would try to select topics that I was familiar enough to speak about in depth if needed. Though the age range is 6-14, I wanted the kids to be encouraged to ask any questions they may have, and I would articulate and expand on the questions as much as possible. If I didn’t know, I would try to search for an answer on the internet. Sometimes I would have extraordinarily curious kids that had a lot of questions, and I would often talk with them for as long as they would like after the presentation, as my other responsibilities at the parks after the presentation were secondary.

This was my favorite aspect of the position. I was and still am an extraordinarily curious person. I think this is one of the greatest qualities a person can have, though unfortunately in my personal experience within the USA, both in school and in society, I find that many people find curious people bothersome and would rather resort to small talk. A child’s curiosity would also be artificially limited by what level an educator, the public education system, and adults deemed “at the child’s level” relative to their age. Aside from sensitive topics, I believe a child’s access to knowledge should have no limitations.

An example of a topic, activity, and presentation that I did was a sound themed presentation on the fundamental aspects of sound in physics alongside an activity where kids could try different instruments, and the Arts and Creativity Specialist lead them in keeping rhythm and beat with each other.

My 2nd term was as the Municipal Career Specialist, where I worked with The City of Dubuque’s Engineering and City Planning department to organize and facilitate Youth outreach programs to inform and promote Careers and interests within their relevant fields.
