The Sakura Matsuri Festival is a vibrant spring event celebrating Japanese culture and cherry blossoms. The largest Japanese street festival in the United States is held annually in Washington, DC., while traditional sakura matsuri events take place across Japan during cherry blossom season. The Matsuri is proud to participate in the National Cherry Blossom Festival as a Premier Event, and promises an unforgettable weekend of Japanese cultural performances, cuisine, and exhibits.

The Sakura Matsuri celebration of Japanese culture in the United States transform Pennsylvania Avenue into a bustling hub of Japanese activity. With over 24 hours of entertainment across multiple stages, attendees enjoy a diverse lineup of performances, including traditional Japanese music and dance, J-Pop and contemporary music, martial arts demonstrations, culinary tutorials, and more.

The Sakura Matsuri is a family-friendly event open to people of all ages. Whether you’re a longtime enthusiast of Japanese culture or simply curious to learn more, this festival offers a unique and immersive experience. This festival is organized by the Japan-America Society of Washington DC (JASWDC) each spring in April. It serves as a premier event of the broader National Cherry Blossom Festival.

The Matsuri features four thematic areas of the Festival and five feature pavilions: Arts & Culture, Ginza Marketplace, Taste of Japan and Japan Now.

The Festival Highlights & Activities

Performances:
Sakura Matsuri festivals feature dynamic live entertainment, including over 24 hours of live music, energetic taiko drumming, traditional dance, and cultural acts across multiple stages, alongside live professional United States Sumo wrestling demonstrations.

Food & Market:
Dozens of vendors offering traditional and modern Japanese street foods like okonomiyaki, yakitori, ramen, and mochi, plus the Ginza Marketplace for artisan crafts.

Cultural Exhibits:
The Sakura Matsuri’s Arts and Culture section provides a deeply engaging and hands-on experience of Japanese tradition. This area is dedicated to giving attendees a chance to not just observe, but to participate in traditional Japanese arts and games. This direct engagement fosters a more memorable and personal connection to the culture. Hands-on workshops covering origami, calligraphy, bonsai styling, and traditional games.

The Japan Now!:
The Japan Wow! Pavilion, located within the vibrant Japan Now area of the Sakura Matsuri, is your dedicated hub for immersive entertainment, blending traditional Japanese fun with cutting-edge technology. It’s designed to bring a variety of authentic Japanese and Japanese-inspired games to attendees of all ages.

In summer 2023, I decided to go abroad as an Au Pair to improve my language skills and experience a new culture first-hand. After a lot of research and many applications, I found a loving host family in Italy who were willing to take me in for a year. This experience was to enrich my life in a way I could hardly have imagined before. I was warmly welcomed into my host family right from the start. My host parents, Carolina and Mattia, and their two children, Ginni (7 years) and Greg (10 years), welcomed me with open arms. I still remember the first day when I arrived at the airport. The children both drew me something cute and greeted me lovingly. This warm welcome helped me to settle in quickly and overcome my initial nervousness. My daily routine as an Au Pair usually started at 7:30 in the morning, I didn't have to help prepare the children and then took her (Ginni) to school. After that I had a few hours free time, which I often used to explore the surroundings, attend language courses or meet up with other Au Pairs. In the afternoon (usually at 2 pm) I picked up the daughter from school, helped her with her homework, played with her in the park (right next door) or at home, and also took her to activities. In the evenings, I hardly ever prepared dinner, but I did set the table to support my host mother, I also helped with the washing up afterwards. One of the biggest challenges, but also one of the most valuable experiences, was learning Italian. Although I didn't have any basic knowledge, I picked up the language relatively quickly, as they always spoke Italian to each other at dinner and I was able to pick up a lot of words by listening carefully. In addition to the language, it was the culture that fascinated me the most. Italy is known for its rich history, culinary specialties and its way of life, “la dolce vita”. My host family enabled me to experience all of this first-hand, especially on a culinary level. Another highlight of my Au Pair stay was the close relationship I built up with the children. Ginni and Greg were shy at first, but gradually we grew into a little family. We spent many hours playing, dancing and going on adventures together in the park (mostly with Ginni). It was fulfilling to see how they trusted me more and more and considered me an integral part of their everyday lives. Of course, there were also challenges. It wasn't always easy being away from my own family and friends. It was also my first experience as an Au Pair and of course I couldn't master everything perfectly right from the start, but thanks to the open and honest communication, this was quickly resolved. Looking back, my year as an Au Pair was one of the most formative times of my life. Not only did I get to know a new language and culture, but I also made many valuable friendships and collected countless memories. My host family became a second home to me and I am eternally grateful for this unique experience. Anyone who has the opportunity to go abroad as an Au Pair should take this chance - it is a journey you will never forget.
