Lettera alla Famiglia

My name is Lucy, I am a college graduate (University of Oregon) who is continuing to pursue education, and I am from a small town in Oregon. I'd like to be an au pair because I have life experience and knowledge to offer to the right family, and I am extremely caring in nature. I grew up in a family with caring parents, four brothers, lots of dogs, and a lot of love. I have seen multiple types of education systems and have successfully navigated my way through them. I've also struggled in many aspects, giving me a unique and useful perspective. I finished university with a degree in humanities, but did not decide on that until my fourth year. I spent the majority of my time studying film, history, and literature, and decided on humanities because I was unsure what I wanted to do afterwards. Coming from a small town to a large university was a major struggle for me and I quickly realized the harshness the world has to offer. Navigating my way through that has taken a lot of years, but it has forced me to critically think about my future and where I would like to end up. I've learned so many lessons in my time throughout university and afterwards when entering the business world. I found myself in a 9-5 job and saw the others around me seeming to be happy and successful, but did not feel the same. Though I was good at it and pride myself in work ethic, I value my personal happiness and am not willing to sacrifice that because I know my skills and assets will be clear in the right role for me. My greatest strengths are creativity, work ethic, loyalty, communication, and confidence. I also value others peoples strengths and feel it is important to understand and utilise them.

Esperienze

I would be a great option for an au pair first and foremost because children gravitate towards me. I connect with children because it is important to respect and listen to them. Children have valuable and insightful things to add in a way that is different from adults, and I make sure to let them know that and make them feel comfortable. I also find it is important to speak to them kindly and as if I were speaking to a friend, not down to them. I often see people discredit young people, I realized this in my own life at a very young age, and from that have decided I'd like to learn from and listen to children rather than discourage. I also believe that caring about someone is to correct them and lead them in the right direction, and this applies to my methods of child caring as well. Every child is different, and understanding how a child communicates and listens is key to leading and correcting them. I have 3 nieces, 3 nephews, and dozens of cousins. My older brother came to live with my parents when he had his first baby for extra assistance and stayed with us until she was three. I played a major role in the beginning of her life and saw what it means to take care of a baby. I have individual connections with all of my nieces and nephews, and look forward to the time I have with them. One of my nephews plays very rough, and has to be reminded there is a balance and a line that can't be crossed while also still having fun. His brother is very different and enjoys physical affection and down time. I have connected to each one in a very different way. I find there are learning opportunities all over the place, even in my own life, and it feels like my obligation as someone who has been though things children haven't to pass on what I can. additionally I genuinely enjoy being around kids and feel natural in play settings.

Though I have not been an au pair, I have a lot of experience living with small children and babies, and also have a perspective that may be different from most. My parents had me biologically when they were 31, but adopted a 12 year old boy and 13 old boy when they were only 26. From there my mom founded a non-profit organization for kids in foster care. My family also adopted 2 more boys after I was born. My home was never a foster home, but was open to any child in need. Throughout high school and middle school, if I knew someone to be in a bad situation, I felt it was my obligation to help them in any way that I could. I recognized my position of privilege at a very early age due to what I saw in my mother's line of work, and figured out how to appropriately communicate with other kids and to make them feel comfortable with me. I have met and connected with children from so many walks of life, and feel that is of upmost importance to always practice kindness. I also saw how my mother's drive and passion allowed to her to build an incredibly successful business from the ground up, and she is now a respected woman in not only her industry but in the political realm as well. She taught me to be well spoken and to never accept less than deserved. She also taught me that education and my access to it is my greatest opportunity, not only in a career aspect but also in regards to reaching my full potential. I would be great in an au pair position because I highly value education and understand how to effectively enforce that, just as my parents did for me.

I have been working since I was 14 years old, and know that I am very valuable in whatever position I am in. I am effective at communication, I'm professional while still being able to be personable, I'm organized, fun, intelligent, and hard working. I love children, will be able to provide them with education and personal connection, and am great with animals as well (I have always had at least one dog). Additionally, I not only preach an active lifestyle, but practice it as well. The mind and body work as a singular machine and must be taken care of as such. I love to bake and am a great cook. I grew up in a vegetarian household (I am not vegetarian), and am happy to incorporate healthy habits into our daily routine. I do not personally believe in restriction and am an advocate for enjoying life's pleasures as I do have a sweet tooth myself, but am totally respectful of any personal beliefs. I engage in yoga and running nearly everyday, and was an athlete for my entire life. I played volleyball, basketball, and softball throughout high school and love doing anything active now. My idea of a fun day would be to go to the beach with any sort of ball or activity, packed lunch, and a book. I also grew up in a family full of artists and consider myself one as well. Currently I am enrolled in costume design course and am pursuing a career in fashion or film.
