Letter to the family

Dear Future Host Family,

My name is Pinja, I’m 19 years old, and I come from Helsinki, Finland. I recently graduated from high school and decided to take a gap year to explore the world before starting university. That decision brought me to Australia—and it’s been the best choice I’ve ever made.

Over the past few months, I’ve been living in Brisbane and working as an au pair for a lovely family with two children, aged four and seven. I’ve been involved in everything from school drop-offs and snack times to imaginative games, reading practice, and calming bedtime routines. Being part of their everyday life has been incredibly rewarding, and it’s shown me just how natural and meaningful caring for children feels to me.

Even before coming to Australia, I had experience working with kids. I regularly babysat in Finland and helped out at children’s clubs and summer camps. I feel confident and comfortable with children of different ages, and I try to create a warm, safe, and fun space around them. I’d describe myself as friendly, calm, and easy to be around. I enjoy getting silly during playtime just as much as I enjoy being a steady, supportive presence when things get tough.

While I’ve really enjoyed city life in Brisbane, I’ve found myself missing the ocean. Growing up in Finland, I was always surrounded by nature, and I’ve realized how much I value being near the water. That’s why I’m now hoping to find a host family living closer to the coast— somewhere I can spend my free time exploring the beach, enjoying fresh air, and maybe even taking my first surf lesson!

I have a valid driver’s license (including an international one) and a Working Holiday visa. I’m flexible with location and start dates, and I’m ready to fully commit to being a helpful, reliable, and positive part of your family. I truly enjoy spending time with children, and I would love the chance to support your family’s routines while also learning more about Australian life and culture.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read my letter. I’d be happy to answer any questions or chat further!

Experience

I’m currently working as an au pair in Brisbane, Australia, caring for two wonderful children aged 4 and 7. My daily responsibilities include school drop-offs and pick-ups, preparing meals, helping with homework, organizing playtime, and supporting the family’s overall routine. It’s been such a rewarding experience, and I’ve loved becoming part of the children's everyday life.

Before coming to Australia, I regularly babysat for two families in Finland over several years, mainly looking after children aged 3 to 5. I helped with evening routines, outdoor play, and creative activities like crafts and games. I’ve also volunteered as a group leader at children’s summer camps and after-school clubs, where I planned activities and ensured a fun and safe environment for school-aged kids.

In addition, I completed a work placement at a Finnish daycare/kindergarten, where I supported the staff with daily routines, mealtimes, group activities, and play. I’ve also worked as a dance instructor for young children, which taught me how to engage and encourage kids in a positive and playful way.

One of the main reasons I chose to become an au pair abroad is because I truly enjoy working with children, and I wanted to combine that with the opportunity to immerse myself in a different culture. Living with a local family offers such a unique way to experience everyday life in a new country, and I’ve learned so much already.

Another important goal for me is to improve my English. I plan to study at university abroad in the near future, and I see this time as a great opportunity to build my language skills and confidence in a natural, real-life setting—while doing something meaningful and enjoyable at the same time.

My time as an au pair has already taught me so much about responsibility, flexibility, and connection, and I’m excited about the possibility of continuing this journey with a new host family.
