Letter to the family

My name is Olivia, I’m 19 years old and from Austria. I studied at a Higher Vocational School for Arts and Crafts, which suits me perfectly because I'm a crafty person. In my free time, I enjoy knitting, sewing, woodworking, puzzling, drawing, and spending cozy evenings with family or friends playing games.

People often describe me as calm, kind, and attentive. I’m not loud, but I’m thoughtful and enjoy creating a peaceful atmosphere. I volunteer regularly with a youth group, where we meet weekly and also travel together for short camps to Italy, Croatia, or other places in Austria. These experiences have taught me teamwork, flexibility, and how to support others.

I’m interested in becoming an Au Pair and joining a home share with an elderly person because I want to grow (personally and socially) while offering companionship and support. I’ve spent a lot of time with my grandmother, gardening, playing cards, and solving puzzles in newspapers, and those simple shared moments made a big impression on me. I believe older people have so much to offer and deserve kindness and attention.

I try to be helpful in everyday life, whether that means stepping in to assist, listening, or simply being there. I’m tidy and respectful of shared spaces, and while I’m still building confidence in cooking and communication, I’m eager to improve. I speak German and English, and I’m curious about other cultures, which is one of the reasons I’m especially drawn to Iceland.

I’d love to explore its nature and way of life while building a meaningful connection with the person I live with.

Experience

While I haven’t formally worked as an Au Pair or lived in a home share with an elderly person yet, I have valuable related experience. I volunteer weekly with a youth group, helping organize activities, cooking, and supporting adolescents. This has taught me to be patient, dependable, and adaptable these are all important qualities when living closely with others.

I’ve also shared a close bond with my grandmother. We often spent time gardening, doing puzzles, or playing cards. Through these quiet moments, I learned how meaningful simple daily routines can be and how much joy there is in just being present with someone.

I’d love to take on this experience abroad to grow more independent and immerse myself in a new culture. I’m especially drawn to Iceland for its nature and peaceful lifestyle. Living with and supporting an elderly person would be a chance to both learn and contribute in a meaningful way.
