Welcome Letter to the Au Pair

Dear Au Pair,

We are delighted to welcome you into our family and our home in Lexden, Colchester. My name is Irina, and I live here with my two boys, Edward (10) and George (9). My husband works abroad and visits monthly, so most of the time it will just be the three of us at home.

Edward and George are bright, curious, and full of energy. They are both learning piano and Mandarin. George loves football, while Edward enjoys rugby. We also have two playful kittens who are very much part of the family and bring a lot of fun to our daily life.

Colchester is England’s oldest recorded town, full of history, culture, and beautiful green spaces. The town centre is only about 10 minutes by bus or car from our home, and there are several bus stops nearby. Colchester Town and Colchester North train stations connect directly to London in under an hour, making it easy to explore the city and beyond.

Your role with us will focus on caring for the boys, supporting their daily routines, and helping with light household tasks related to them. We will agree on a clear weekly schedule so you also have plenty of free time to explore, attend classes, meet new people, and enjoy your stay in the UK.

We want you to feel part of our family, not just “help.” Please always feel comfortable sharing your thoughts or asking questions, we value openness and communication.

Job Description

To help you feel comfortable and confident in your role with us, I’d like to share a few key points about our household and what we expect:

1. Family Life
• I am currently in the early stages of building my own business, so I work from home at times and also travel occasionally.
• When I travel for work, I need to feel confident that Edward and George are safe, cared for, and happy in your company. Trust and reliability are very important for us.

2. The Boys – Edward & George
• Both boys attend school during the day, and they also have after-school activities. Edward plays rugby; George plays football. Both learn piano and Mandarin.
• Your role will include helping them with their routines: school runs (when needed), meals, homework support, and getting to activities.
• We try to keep a balance between activities, screen time, and rest. Bedtime is around [insert usual bedtime].

3. Household Duties
• Please help us keep the house tidy and organised on a daily basis, especially in the shared areas (kitchen, living room, play/study areas).
• Light house duties include laundry for the boys, preparing simple meals/snacks for them, and ensuring their rooms and things are in order.
• We also have two kittens — they are part of the family. Basic care (feeding, water, keeping their area clean) will be shared.

4. Working Hours & Free Time
• We will agree on a weekly schedule (approximately [x] hours per week).
• There will be times when I need additional support, especially if I am away for work. In those cases, we will always discuss in advance.
• You will have free time to explore, study, or meet friends, this is important for your experience, too.

5. Communication & Trust
• Open, honest communication is key. Please feel free to ask questions or share any concerns.
• Trust and care are central for us. My boys are my top priority, and I need to know they are safe, respected, and happy in your care.

Accommodation

You will have your own private bedroom on the first floor, next to my room. It has windows and is comfortably furnished.
You will share a bathroom with the boys, but the house has four bathrooms in total, including a powder room on the ground floor, so there is never a shortage.
Meals are included, and the house is your home while you are with us.
