Welcome Letter to the Au Pair
Dear Au Pair,
Thank you for considering joining our little family! I’d like to introduce myself and share a bit about our life, so you can see if this opportunity would be a good fit for you.
I’m Heike, 50 years old, and I live with my 10-year-old granddaughter, Amelie, who moved in with me this year. Her parents are unable to care for her at the moment, so I’ve taken on the joy and responsibility of providing her with a stable and loving home.
Amelie is a relaxed, easygoing, and incredibly loving child. She adores singing and art, plays basketball twice a week, and loves swimming. She’s intelligent and sensitive, and while she has recently started grammar school and is adjusting well, she currently needs extra support with her schoolwork to keep up with the workload.
Our home also includes Max, our lively 5-year-old Border Collie, who adds plenty of joy and energy to our daily lives.
We live in a beautiful residential area of Düsseldorf, in the borough of Grafenberg. Our apartment occupies the entire first floor of a three-story house and spans 120sqm. It includes three bedrooms, a lounge, kitchen, bathroom, separate toilet, and a foyer. We also have a large balcony overlooking the garden.
The area is peaceful and family-friendly, with parks, a forest, and both indoor and outdoor swimming pools nearby. Public transport is easily accessible right at our doorstep, making it convenient to get around. A supermarket, bakery, doctor’s office, and several restaurants (Japanese, Italian, Greek) as well as charming coffee shops are just around the corner. We’re also only about 15 minutes from the main station, CBD, and the old town.
I’m originally from Cape Town and speak English, Afrikaans, and German fluently, as I’ve spoken them from birth. Amelie speaks only German for now and has started learning English at school.
As for myself, I’m a translator and interpreter by profession. I’m vegan, though Amelie is vegetarian and has no problem eating meat occasionally. Our household is relaxed, open, and we enjoy jolly moments together.
I am looking for an au pair who can help care for Amelie, particularly during the afternoons after school and by taking her to her sports and other activities 2-3 times a week. While she’s in school for 8-9 hours each day, I’d appreciate having someone reliable who can dedicate time to her schoolwork and provide her with support and companionship.
Occasionally, I like to travel for up to two weeks at a time, 2-3 times a year, and I also enjoy going out or staying overnight at a friend’s place 2-3 nights a week. During these times, I would need someone dependable to look after Amelie and ensure her routine runs smoothly.
We have a guest room available if you need to stay overnight or for a short period, but I’d prefer if you had your own apartment. This isn’t a strict requirement, as flexibility is more important to us.
Ideally, we would love to welcome someone who is vegan or vegetarian, but this is not a priority. The most important thing is that you are prepared to build a caring and warm relationship with Amelie, as she values connection and thrives on kindness and understanding.
If this sounds like a role you’d enjoy and find fulfilling, we’d love to hear from you.
Warm regards,
Heike
