Welcome Letter to the Au Pair

We’ve been fortunate enough to share our au pair journey so far with two wonderful people who’ve both left a hugely positive mark on our lives, but big holes to fill… Our first au pair was able to spend 6 months with us before starting their degree at university and our second has been with us since June 2024.

Sadly due to a change in personal circumstances our current au pair needs to return to their home country on short notice, and with a heavy but hopeful heart I’ve opened up our profile again to look for the next person we may be able to welcome into our lives. A lot has changed since I last advertised our role, but there’s also a lot that will always stay the same!

We're still a humble, almost always hectic and sometimes hilarious family who need an extra pair of hands and we’re once again looking for somebody to jump in and fill a spot at our table while my husband is finishing his work abroad - leaving me (the better half) wrestling with our two children (my son, 9 and daughter, 6), the school timetable and my sometimes antisocial work commitments.

We'd love to welcome you into our family until at least next summer (but hoping you're able to stay with us longer!) allowing you time to really settle in, build great relationships with the children, make amazing memories and collect more than a few dinner-table worthy tales of your time as an au pair!

As a family we need someone who can take us at face value and dive into day-to-day life with us. I can promise it's never boring! With us you'll have a meaningful place in the family, live in a proper English country home-from-home and receive any and all support you may need to allow you to make the most of your time in our household.

We live in a beautiful area of Somerset in a traditional 'rustic' (read: still being renovated) Victorian Farmhouse with lots of garden and land, access to miles of cycleways and footpaths, paddling boarding/ rowing and many of the most historic areas of the UK. We also have access to the M5/ motorways and rail links if you want to go further afield and see bright city lights!

We've had really fantastic experiences so far and although it's really hard to think about goodbyes, especially when they’re sooner than you planned, we know we'll find another person to add to our family or you'll find us, so please get in touch if you think you could become part of this team!

We don't mind gender, we wouldn't discount couples either. It is however essential that you have a driving license, and the right to au pair in the UK (Tier 5 Visa, UK Passport, Pre-settled Status etc).

Even if we don't look like the family for you, thanks for taking the time to read our profile blurb and good luck on your search for your dream hosts!

Job Description

Au Pair 'duties' would be relatively simple: I need support when I'm working, and as a doctor I work shifts. If I'm on a shift I'd need somebody who could take the children to and from school and feed them and put them to bed whilst I'm at the hospital or handle waking them up and getting them to school if I'm on a nightshift (nights are every other month). Occasionally I work shifts over the weekend. Usually once a month if on the full time rota. I stress you won't be thrown in and left to cope, we can support you a lot whilst you settle in!

At all other times I'm their primary caregiver, but would appreciate someone able to help me sometimes with the day-to-day childcare as an extra pair of hands. Whilst they’re in school your time is your own too, likewise when I’m at home I don’t expect you to provide childcare then. Essentially I need somebody comfortable with holding the fort at home when I’m at work, with my Mum here as back-up if needed (she lives in the annexe next door).

School drop off and pick up is approx 10 minutes away from home by car - unfortunately driving a manual car is essential. We would be able to offer you some driving lessons in the UK if needed, to start you off and get you experience on our wonky rural roads... You'll have full insurance with a small car and be able use it as your own.

I make sure that our au pairs have down time when I’m at home and are only officially ‘on duty’ when I’m at work. Your rest is important to me and I do not want you to move mountains... As mentioned my Mum also lives next door and can support when/ if needed as back-up. Shes about 10 metres away and retired so not often unavailable…

We really want you to be a part of the family. Although I want to make it clear why we need help and what with, childcare and all else involved (e.g., housework) is still my responsibility and something I enjoy. I would not expect you to do these things 'for me' unless I am working on a shift and physically not there, but hope you'd be happy to be part of the team and help with childcare/ housework 'with me' from time to time! You'll be invited with us on holidays and trips, meet our friends and extended family and be immortalised in our family Polaroid Photo wall! Our current au pairs have traveled with us to Baku, Tablisi and been skiing with us whilst away and recently joined us on a family holiday to a resort in Turkey (and not for childcare!). They come with us on any and all of our family trips/ events or excursions!

My ideal match would be someone willing to get stuck into all aspects of life with me and help us build a beautiful family home that - as a honorary member of our family - will always have a room spare for you to come back and stay... We'd really like someone who is looking to build a strong relationship with us and stay for 1+ year(s) to see us through this period of our lives with James away. As it stands, he'll be finishing up his contract in 2026 but we've loved having an au pair in our lives and would like to continue building close relationships beyond this too.

Our decision to find an Au Pair is not transactional, we not looking to 'hire' but for me especially, I'm looking for someone to share the experience of raising two wonderful children with and help me to continue to be able to work in a job I love whilst looking after my kids and giving them the best experiences in life!

Thank you so much for your time if you've made it this far! Please do get in touch if you're interested in being our plus one!

Accommodation

Our home is our 'forever home', our base camp... We live in a 5 bedroom and 2/2.5 bathroom Victorian Farmhouse that's had little done to it in the years before we moved here. We're renovating it, but that takes time and there's always a project or eight on the go!

As a welcomed member of our family you can choose between two 'spare bedrooms' in the house both big enough for a double bed, decent sized wardrobe, desk and TV with somewhere comfy to sit. It will be private: we respect your personal space and downtime.

There is a 'family' bathroom next to these rooms, the other bathroom is also being renovated! Downstairs the main rooms include our traditional kitchen, living room (more adult space) and a large kids playroom as well other spaces. The house can get colder over the winter, but we have quilts and toast marshmallows on the fire! In summer it's absolutely idyllic.

As above, it's rustic but we're working on it and as a work in progress if you're staying with us I'd love to help you paint and decorate your own room so it feels 100% yours! You can do whatever you like cosmetically with it to feel at home.

We live in Somerset, it's rural county famed for orchards and cider. Our home has access to miles of footpaths and cycleways through beautiful English countryside. We're 10-15m walk from our local Town which has a wonderful cafe culture with all the amenities you need, it's only 5 minutes by car.

Our nearest 'big' cities are Bristol and Exeter, Bristol is an excellent city with so much going on and 1hr 15m or so by car! Bigger towns include Taunton and Yeovil and we often travel there, this is where we usually catch a train further afield e.g., to London.

There are many stunning historic homes and buildings surrounding us. We are biased as we live here, but if you enjoy the countryside there is nowhere in the UK like it.
