Welcome Letter to the Au Pair

Hi!
I (John) grew up in Virginia while my wife was born in Hong Kong and moved to Washington when she was eight. We met in Seattle 9 years ago and have been married for almost 7 years now. Our home is just across Puget Sound from downtown Seattle on Bainbridge Island, WA. Bainbridge is a short ferry ride from downtown Seattle, and it’s a beautiful spot to live with significantly more space and less traffic than downtown. Our home has plenty of land that back up to a forest, hiking trails, and is a short drive away from a beach and hiking trails. We personally enjoy hikes, day trips around the Pacific Northwest, skiing, and sailing – but spend lots of weekends in our gardens and trying new restaurants. We travel for vacation (both internationally and in the US) up to a month a year and are excited to show our son the world. We’d love to host an au pair that would like to join us on vacations (of course, that wouldn’t cut into her own vacation time) in exchange for a few hours of extra support while travelling; however, that certainly isn’t a requirement.
After some challenges that eventually lead to IVF, we’re extremely excited to have our 1st child, a boy, on the way and due at the start of June 2020. We both work full-time; however, Hilda goes into the office twice a week in Seattle and I work from my home office most days. We’re looking for an au pair to provide support with sleep and feeding schedules, and to help us make schedules and workloads easier so we may spend more time with our son. Of course, we’re looking for a responsible, warm and friendly person that we trust to provide engaged and interactive care for our son. Because Hilda was born in Hong Kong, she grew up speaking Cantonese and ideally, we’d love to find someone that speaks Mandarin, so we can expose our son to the language.
Other than that, Hilda and I are a little silly and very much in love. We’ve confident and strong personalities but are extremely respectful and not rigid in our ways. We’re going to be ecstatic for an extra pair of hands as we fumble through the first year of our son’s life. However, we’re both really looking forward to being parents – including all the associated challenges. We’re going to be around a LOT for our son and aren’t looking to handoff the difficult parts of raising an infant. The right au pair will be confident in her ability to help us create the right environment for our son and our entire household and thankfully, allow us a little breathing room to learn how to be great parents. Just as important to us, is that our au pair is happy and feels at home with our family. We’re very strong believers in the importance of balance in life and work. We hope we can provide some new experiences in a respectful and caring work environment for our au pair.

Job Description

We typically have very flexible schedules. Hilda goes into her office in Seattle twice a week while John works from his home office the majority of the time. The primary work hours for us are 9am to 4pm; however, with our schedule flexibility, we're around a lot and dont have a hard schedule requirement. For example, during the work week, our Au Pair could anticipate 4-6 hours max of childcare between 8am-4pm and 2-4 hours from 4pm to bedtime. As our son will be a newborn, so he'll be sleeping a lot during the day. Short feeding/play cycles with breaks while he sleeps will most likely be normal. Some night feeding and sleep training support is required. On weekends, the schedule would be more relaxed. We tend to go out for nice meals regularly and take day trips in the area as much as possible. Most times, we'd like our au pair to join us for those meals/trips as most times we'd bring our son and an extra pair of hands is always nice. We typically go on vacation up to a month a year and would like our Au Pair to join us when possible (this wouldn't affect her own vacation time), but that's certainly not a requirement. In general, we're more than happy to work with our Au Pair to accommodate her schedule as much as possible.
