Au Pair in Sweden: information on the program
Sweden is a popular destination for Au Pairs who would like to experience Nordic family life, improve their language skills, and get to know Swedish culture. The purpose of an Au Pair stay is cultural exchange: the Au Pair lives with a Host Family, helps with childcare and light housework, and studies Swedish during the stay.

For Au Pairs

Working Conditions
- Maximum 25 hours per week
- Maximum 5 hours per day
- Combined work and studies must not exceed 40 hours per week
- Rules on time off should be described in the written agreement
- At least 1 day off per week
- 4 weeks of paid holidays for a 12-month stay
- The language course is the primary scope of the stay
- The Au Pair must study Swedish for most of the time not spent working
- The Au Pair’s schedule must allow course attendance and study
- Combined work and study time must not be over 40 hours per week
- Childcare and light housework only
- Duties must stay within the agreed 25 hours/week

- The Host Family must take out accident insurance for the Au Pair
- The insurance must cover accidents at work, accidents on the way to and from work, and illnesses caused by the work
- Either the Au Pair or the Host Family must have comprehensive medical insurance
- Medical insurance must cover urgent and other medical care, hospitalisation, emergency dental care, and medical repatriation
- Check in advance whether the Au Pair’s driving licence is valid in Sweden
- Driving licences from EEA countries are valid in Sweden
- Driving licences from non-EEA countries are usually valid for up to 1 year after registering as a resident in Sweden
Host Families provide Au Pairs with:
Accommodation
The Host Family must provide accommodation as part of the Au Pair arrangement. The room must be completely furnished, have a window with natural light, and be of exclusive use to the Au Pair.Meals
The Host Family must provide full-board: 3 meals a day.Pocket Money
The Host Family must pay the Au Pair at least SEK 5,920 per month before tax. Au Pairs are entitled to at least 10% of the price base amount.Language Course
The arrangement must allow the Au Pair to study Swedish for most of the time not spent working. The combined working and study time should not be over 40 hours. The Au Pair and the Host Family should agree on who’s responsible for the language course costs.Health Insurance
The Host Family must take out accident insurance, and either the Host Family or the Au Pair must have, or have applied for, comprehensive medical insurance for the entire stay.Transportation
If transport is needed for childcare duties, this should be agreed upon individually in the written arrangement.Legal Support

Understanding your agreement
Both the Au Pair and the Host Family may terminate the contract with two weeks’ notice, allowing time to resolve issues or arrange a replacement.
- The period of the Au Pair’s stay
- Work responsibilities and maximum weekly hours
- How the Au Pair will be able to study Swedish
- Compensation, board, and lodging
- Information about accident insurance
- Other terms of employment, such as time off
- Contact person in the Host Family
- Signatures of both the Host Family and the Au Pair
The agreement should clearly show that the Au Pair’s tasks are limited to childcare and light housework, and that the combined time spent on work and studies does not exceed 40 hours per week.
Au Pair program costs in Sweden
For the Host Family and Au Pair
Host Family Covers
- Pocket money: cash compensation of at least SEK 5,920 per month
- Accommodation: private room (no rent paid by the Au Pair)
- Food: daily meals at home
- Accident insurance: it must cover accidents that occur during working hours or on the way to and from work, as well as illness resulting from their work
- Health insurance: must be acquired by either the Au Pair or the Host Family, and be valid for the entire Au Pair stay
- Household-related costs: utilities, internet, and normal living expenses
Au Pair Covers
- Residence permit fee: 1,500 SEK for non-EU/EEA applicants only.
- Health insurance: if the Au Pair arranges it instead of the Host Family
- Travel costs: unless otherwise agreed
- Language course fees: unless otherwise agreed
- Personal expenses: such as phone, transport, and leisure
- If you are applying for an Au Pair residence permit, you must do so from outside Sweden.
- If you already have a valid Au Pair permit, you can change Host Family without submitting a new application, as long as the permit is still valid and the requirements for an Au Pair permit are still met.
