Welcome Letter to the Au Pair

Dear Prospective Caregiver,

-- Update: August 15, 2025 --

Candidates have been selected for 2025 and 2026. I will continue to take applications for back up (to help me) or to place with new matches as resources are available. Please reach it out if you are interested in either of these options. Please acknowledge that you have reviewed this letter when you reach out. Best regards, James

--------------------

My name is James. I am a college professor and health coach living in Old Town Fort Collins, Colorado. In 1999 I sustained a C5 spinal cord injury (quadriplegia). I use a wheelchair and need some support, but I am active, independent, and engaged in my community. I am seeking a trustworthy, kind live-in companion to share my home in a way that is more than a job: a supportive home-share built on reliability, good communication, and mutual respect. Most of your commitment is overnight presence while you sleep, plus light help and companionship. If you enjoy meaningful conversation, exploring the neighborhood, good food, music, parks, and community life—and you value a calm, collaborative home—I would love to connect. Together we can create a setting where we both thrive.
Sincerely,
James

Job Description

Core duties:
Provide overnight presence from about 10 pm to 6 am, at least five nights per week. You have your own room and are free to sleep, but should be available for rare emergencies. Light assistance with morning and evening routines, shared meals, errands or appointments, and companionship is also part of the role. Training is provided and there is backup support.

Flexibility and pathways:
This home-share arrangement can expand based on your skills, interests, and what is allowed by law. The essential commitment for all applicants—domestic or international—includes the overnight presence requirement described above.

U.S.-based applicants with work authorization may add paid caregiving hours beyond the home-share, up to 30 hours per week, funded through Colorado Consumer Directed Attendant Support Services (CDASS) starting at $20 per hour. If the role exceeds 30 hours per week, it can be structured as a full-time position (typically 30–35 hours per week) that still includes the overnight commitment. Full-time positions may include wages up to $4000 per month, paid time off, health insurance, retirement match, relocation assistance, holiday bonuses, and paid training or continuing education.

International applicants without U.S. work authorization participate as volunteers through my nonprofit’s International Volunteer Sponsorship Program (a cultural and educational home-share, not employment). This usually follows a two-phase pathway: a short trial period in visitor status (for example B-1) followed by a sponsored academic year as a full-time student (F-1) in Colorado State University’s Intensive English Program. Program support includes tuition and fees, required insurance, books and supplies, room and board, round-trip travel, visa coaching, and a modest monthly personal allowance of about $500 (USD).

Canada and Mexico: In some cases, qualified citizens may pursue options such as TN status depending on role and credentials; all pathways must comply with current law and are evaluated case by case.

Timing:
Accepting backup applications for this fall and next spring, and new applications for May 2026 onward.

What this is not:
Not a full-time clinical post, not agency shift work, and international volunteer participation is not wage employment.
