Welcome Letter to the Au Pair

Warm greetings from Shanghai!

We are truly excited at the prospect of welcoming you into our family. Let us introduce ourselves a little so you can get to know us better.

I (the father) graduated from Peking University with my undergraduate degree, and later earned my MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. My wife completed her graduate studies in law at Boston University. Together, we have a wonderful son who is about to enter the third grade. He is bright, curious, and full of energy.

We are looking for a native English-speaking au pair who can help us pick up our son from school (it’s very close—about a 20-minute walk or just one stop by bus), supervise his homework, and spend time engaging with him through play and conversation in English. We hope this will be a joyful and enriching experience for both you and our son.

We live in Xuhui District, one of the most vibrant areas in Shanghai, right next to the city’s central districts of Jing’an and Huangpu. Our neighborhood is extremely convenient—there is a bus stop right outside our residential compound gate, and the nearest metro station is less than a 5-minute walk away, making it easy to reach any part of the city.

If you’re interested in studying Chinese while you’re here, there are several universities nearby that offer language courses. They are all easily accessible on foot or by bike—and there are plenty of shared bicycles right at our doorstep.

We look forward to sharing our culture, introducing you to authentic Chinese food, and helping you experience the dynamic life of Shanghai. At the same time, we hope you’ll become a part of our family and enjoy many memorable moments with us.

Please feel free to ask any questions you may have—we are more than happy to provide more details about our family, daily life, or Shanghai itself. We truly look forward to meeting you and starting this wonderful journey together.

Warm regards,
Jerry

Job Description

The main part of the job is to help our son stay focused on his homework after school, gently guiding him to develop the habit of completing his work efficiently on his own. This way, he’ll have more time to play, exercise, and just be a happy kid.

We would also love for you to create a fun, all-English environment after school—chatting, playing, and sharing stories in English so he can practice his speaking naturally and get to know more about your culture.

It’s important to us that you’re patient, caring, and truly enjoy spending time with children. We hope you can encourage our son to think independently and explore new ideas.

If you’re comfortable, we would also appreciate it if you could occasionally prepare a simple breakfast for our family. So that we can send him to school a bit earlier.

Overall, we want this to be a relaxed and enjoyable experience for you, where you become part of our family while helping our son grow.
