Job Description
Our daily routine is the following:
Well, I'm a teacher and I get my timetable for the next school year (starting mid-September) in July at the earliest, so it's hard to give details. Generally though:
School starts early in Germany. I leave the house at 7.10am at the latest for the first lesson - that would be the time your working day starts (you better be an early riser, otherwise it might be a bit hard for you). That means though I will be back by midday, when your working day would (normally) end. That's also the time we normally have the big meal in the day (very traditionally German), and then rather a small(er) supper in the evening. You can mostly spend the afternoon and weekends as you like then, even though I have to stress that this is not a given. There will be extra commitments: Maybe babysitting a night or I will have a class in the afternoon (but then not in the morning) or some extra conferences or stuff - but that will change from week to week. Maybe sometimes I will ask you to work a day on the weekend, but the main bulk will be during the week. I can promise though that I'm flexibel and reasonable and won't press on you any commitments without due warning. If it still coincides with your fixed plans we'll find a solution. I'm a firm believer in talking to each other to solve problems. I hope to find some flexibility on your side too, though, as my job simply cannot guarantee a fixed weekly schedule.
Holidays (and there are lots) will be different anyway as I will need you, but will be much more flexible concerning the times which will give you opportunities to explore if and as you like.
Of course it will never be no more than the 30 per week / 6 hours a day that's legally binding in Germany, and you will get your holidays as legally required.
Your task will mostly be looking after Vianne - that includes playing a lot, inside and outside (apart from the garden there's a playground nearby), crafting, singing, dancing, ect. (whatever you fancy, be creative), preparing breakfast or other meals (no cooking skills required, just warming up will suffice), and yes, changing nappies. I have a policy of strictly no screens for her till she turns three, so no parking her in front of the TV or a phone. Apart from that I'm open to anything that she (and you) enjoys.
There will be some light house work, but really, I don't expect you to be the hired help. I only expect what people do in every family, clear up dishes, helping with preparing meals, filling the washing machine or hang up washing occasionally, maybe sweeping or vacuuming. Normal stuff you do whereever you live. I'm not too particular with cleaning. Of course it shouldn't be dirty and stuff shouldn't be lying around everywhere, but I don't clean out of principle (life's to short for that).
FINANCES: I pay the 280€ per month standard pocket money for au pairs (additionally to board and accommodation), as well as your health insurance. If you like to take a German course, I will support you with the costs up to 70€ per month towards that (if it's more expensive, you will have to pay the rest). There is a monthly public transport ticket that costs 49€ and allows you to take any local train or bus in the whole of Germany - I would support you there with paying half of it monthly.
I won't, however, pay for your flight - you will have to get to Germany yourself (of course I can pick you up from the airport or train station). I also won't pay for your visa (if you need one) - but I will give you all the forms and letters necessary and can help you with it.
For receiving your money, you will have to open a bank account with a German bank - I can't give you cash on hand. It's a legal thing. Of course I can help you with setting that up. There will also have to be a contract outlining everything said here that you will have to sign.
You are entitled to 4 weeks of payed holidays during a stay of 12 months. Your days off will have to coincide with German school holidays however, as that's the time I can look after Vianne myself. Don't worry though, there's plenty to pick from - autumn, Christmas, winter, Easter, Pentecost or summer holidays (that would be after your stay though). So it's not that you don't have a choice. Sometimes bank holidays will enable you to take an extended weekend off as well if you prefer. It's only that school days are off - that's when I need you.
I don't drink, but that does't mean you are not allowed to. There will be absolutely no drinken while working though. I accept no smoking (including clothes smelling of smoke) or any kind of drugs in the house or on the grounds.
Last but nor least: Should we somehow not get along (hopefully not, but it happens and needs to be talked about), your contract will include the clause that you will have to stay until I can find a new au pair, at least 2 weeks. I, on the other hand, will commit to finding a replacement as soon as possible should you want to leave before the end of the contract. No-one should suffer needlessly. Of course should there be more serious reasons the law says that the contract can then be terminated immediately (on both sides).
