Letter to the family

Dear future Host Family,
I hope this letter finds you well. My name is Aitana, and I am writing to express my enthusiasm at the prospect of becoming a part of your family as an au pair. Having had the incredible opportunity to be an au pair in Switzerland for the past two years, I have developed a deep passion for cultural exchange and am eager to embark on a new adventure with your family.
During my time in Switzerland, I have had the privilege of learning about and immersing myself in Swiss culture. The experience has been enriching, it has made me feel in love with a country and people that are very different from my homeland, but even more important, it has fueled my desire to continue exploring new cultures and gaining diverse experiences. I have found that living with local families provides a unique insight into a place and its customs, and I believe it is the best way to truly understand and appreciate a culture, and a wonderful way of sharing mine too!
One of the driving forces behind my love for travel and cultural exploration is my own family. I come from a very diverse family, having my backgrounds in the Basque Country (Spain), as well as Italy and France; which made me grow in an environment where we learnt to appreciate all the traditions of our ancestry at the same time that we embraced the marvelous argentinian culture. They have always encouraged me to broaden my horizons, explore different parts of the world, and embrace the richness that comes with understanding various lifestyles. This encouragement has shaped my perspective, and I bring this openness and curiosity to every new opportunity. I was not the person that arrived in Switzerland two years ago, but every moment here, as well as the friends that I have made along the way, made me shape my new me, adding things into my life from different cultures, and I cannot wait to also learn the different lifestyles that can be found in the United States while sharing my time with a new family and their children (and if this is the case, also the pets!)
Apart from my passion for cultural exchange, I am also a person that enjoys learning new languages. During my first time as an au pair in the Swiss lands, I didn't speak any french, a language I learned completely here, and this country has also given me the opportunity to learn some basic german and improve my italian (and I plan to keep improving them even if I am far away!). This being said, I started to learn english when I was a little kid. I always felt curiosity towards English speaking countries, and I am eager for this opportunity to improve my language skills. I believe that living in an English-speaking environment will be the most effective way for me to enhance my idiom abilities. I am dedicated to not only contributing to the well-being of your family but also to creating an environment where we can learn from each other and grow together.
I am confident that my experiences, both as an au pair and as an individual with a genuine curiosity about the world, will make me a positive and valuable addition to your family. I am excited about the prospect of getting to know you, your children, and sharing in the joys and challenges of daily life.
Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to the possibility of becoming a part of your family and creating wonderful memories together.
Kind regards,
Aitana

Experience

Becoming an au pair was a decision that transformed my life in ways I could have never imagined. Stepping into the shoes of an au pair provided me with the unique opportunity to not only immerse myself in a new culture but also to become an integral part of a family in a foreign land.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my au pair experience has been the precious moments spent with the children. From morning routines to bedtime stories, I believe I´ve become a constant, and good presence in their lives, forming bonds that transcend language barriers. For example, when I arrived in Switzerland, I didn't speak any french, and the kids didn't speak any english, but despite this, we still got a great connection from the beginning and both parts have made great improvements in the respective languages. Playing games, helping with homework, and organizing fun activities have not only enriched their lives but also filled mine with joy and fulfillment: something I have found very rewarding is that when you're with children, you find yourself always smiling, even when things aren't going as planned!

Apart from this, something that I also find amazing is that living in a new country has given me the chance to view the world through a different lens. Experiencing daily life in a foreign environment has broadened my horizons, allowing me to appreciate diverse customs, traditions, and ways of thinking. Conversations with the host family and local community have opened my eyes to cultural nuances that go beyond guidebooks, providing me with a deeper understanding of the world.
And regarding what many people think, that we are only wise as adults, part of this different perspective also comes from interacting with the kids. I will never stop being surprised by how the same situation can be seen so differently when it's a kid that's telling you about it, providing a unique sense of the world.

But being an au pair isn't just about embracing a new culture; it's also an opportunity to share your own. I've introduced the children to the wonders of my home country, sharing stories, traditions, and even preparing traditional meals together. Through this cultural exchange, we've created a rich tapestry that blends the best of both worlds, fostering an environment of mutual respect and appreciation. I can proudly say that now, they ask me for "argentinian sweets", one of the kids even learnt some spanish, or that the older´s kid 's favorite food is actually a Spanish dish!

Of course, adapting to a new culture comes with many challenges. From the different time zone to my home country, to the eating culture, to the languages, every day has felt like a challenge to me, but I am very lucky that the host family (from the parents, to the kids, and even the grandmother´s, with whom I have found friendship too), has played a crucial role in helping me integrate, making me feel like a valued member of their household.

In conclusion, my time as an au pair has been nothing short of a cultural odyssey. It has provided me with the chance to form lasting connections with the children, gain a profound insight into a different way of life, extend my friendships and family, and share the beauty of my own culture. This journey has not only shaped my personal growth but has also left an indelible mark on my heart, which I hope I can continue in a new country!
