I would like to go abroad for these experiences because as an American, I only truly know the American perspective on world issues and culture. I believe that with the amount of diversity that exists in the world, it is our duty as humans to thirst for more knowledge and learn things that are different from what they have previously known or seen. Working abroad will give me different, valuable perspectives that I may not have even considered before. Additionally, as mentioned in the above letter, I simply love kids and forming relationships with other people. Just as I can gain valuable experience by being overseas, I believe that others can learn things from me and I think it will be amazing to share my experience with others. I will describe my experience in a bit more detail now!
- Summer camp counselor - I was a summer camp counselor with YMCA Camp MacLean for two years. This requires me living with the kids in cabins. This helped me with many skills, such as time management, leadership, teamwork, healthy communication, and problem-solving.
- CircEsteem - I was also a summer camp counselor at the day camp CircEsteem. This is also where I had directed my shows and been a participant in many programs. Working there allowed me to do many things. Not only was I a summer camp counselor, I was a director, a team member, a coach, and a teaching artist. CircEsteem is a Chicago-based organization that teaches youth how to do circus. This not only means that I have many tricks to impress people (like being a great juggler), but I also have experience with teaching and guiding people who may be scared and uncomfortable.
- AMC - I worked at an AMC movie theater in Chicago part-time. This was incredibly valuable as a student who is currently studying film. This allowed me to manage money, be more responsible, and work efficiently in a team.
