Letter to the family

Dear Reader,

My name is Raphaela, I’m twenty-two years old and live in Germany. I grew up in Texas and moved to Germany when I was seven. Ever since I’ve lived in my small town with my parents, my older sister, two younger brothers and our cats and dog.

In 2021 I graduated from my local “High school” and after had always wanted to travel. Due to the Corona Pandemic and the uncertainties that followed I decided to undertake a three year paid internship (which is quite typical in Germany) as an industrial clerk at a local company. My internship has taught me a lot about business administration but most of all about the real world. I work 40 hours per week and improved my team / communication skills, reliability and independent working. I admire my colleagues and get along with them wonderfully but I feel it is about time I follow my dreams and see what the world has waiting for me beyond the borders of my small town. I enjoy traveling and aspire to learn more about the world and cultures around me. Everyone I know advises me to go out into the world and gain my own experiences.

I’d like to become an Au Pair or share a home with elderly because I believe both parties can benefit from each other. I will hopefully gain an unforgettable experience with people I will always hold dear to my heart and you will certainly gain an extroverted, dedicated and loyal young woman who romanticizes life and will go out of her way to ensure the people within her proximity are genuinely happy.

I believe I would be qualified both as an Au Pair as well as a “Home share with elderly” due to the personality traits mentioned above. I am a determined young woman who doesn’t give up and has over three years worth of working experience. I’ve had several jobs since the age of sixteen while achieving remarkable grades in school, including having been on student council. Due to having two younger brothers I learned responsibility at a young age and how to nurture young minds. As Team captain and Co-trainer of my Cheerleading group I have gained leadership qualities and am skilled in teamwork, trust and commitment.

I hope I’ve sparked your interest and am looking forward to meeting you.

With love,

Raphaela

Experience

When I was 15 I moved in with my grandmother who lives next door, so I’m used to being around elderly. I also helped my parents with raising my two stubborn younger brothers (now 13 and 15). My youngest brother has autism which can be difficult at times and has definitely taught me a lot of patience. We nag each other as siblings do but in the end I love them deeply and cherish the time we spend together. Recently my sister gave birth to the cutest little baby girl with whom I adore spending time with. I love spending time with children although I do understand the challenges that come with it. I truly believe in encouraging our younger generations and teaching them that they can achieve whatever they set their mind to but at the same time do believe they need to learn discipline and certain qualities such as kindness, honesty and compassion.

Regarding “Home share with elderly” I imagine this can also be a very nice alternative to the common Au Pair. I spend quite a lot of time with my German grandmother and help her with her needs (e.g. I give her her daily eye drops, thrombosis needle, help her with going on walks as she currently needs crutches and occasionally lotion her legs and paint her nails). I also love spending time with my American grandmother when I visit who is by far the kindest woman I have ever met. I feel like elderly often don’t get the attention they need and I empathize with them because it seems they are so often lonely and don’t have enough people to talk to who actually listen and care.
This is why I’d love to help our older generations and at the same time also hope to gain some great life tips and profit from their wisdom.

I would like to become an Au Pair or a “Home share with elderly” because I believe I can learn much from others around me and want to make a positive impact on others lives. Getting to benefit from others cultures and traveling to another country is simply an amazing bonus.
