Letter to the family

Dear host family,
My name is Fanny and I’m 26 years old. I’m currently in college to be a psychologist and will be graduating in June. I'm currently writing my master's thesis on how to best build an alliance when working with kids and teenagers. I live in a small city in the south of Sweden with my family. I have two younger brothers named Johan and Love. I also have two cats – a tuxedo cat named Prince and a ragdoll kitten names Frances. My biggest interests are cooking and baking. I’m also an outdoor person and enjoy being out in nature. I like being active, preferably by hiking, walking or doing yoga. I’m also a creative person and enjoy doing arts and crafts.

I'm a very nurturing person and I've always enjoyed caring for children. I appreciate how open minded and curious children are and I think it makes them a lot of fun to be around. I love listening to their thoughts on things and get a sense of how they experience the world. I also think it's extremely rewarding to work with kids. I love the strong bond you form while working with them and that you get to follow them through their early life. It's so fun to watch them learn new things, take new steps, experience new adventures and form their own identities. I’ve actually thought about being an au pair since I was a teenager because the “au pair concept” has always been very appealing to me. Now that I’m about to graduate I feel 100% ready to go!
I have visited America multiple times (mostly California) and loved the American nature and culture. I have a family friend who worked as an au pair in her early 20’s (she’s now in her late 50’s) and is still in contact with her host family. She even attenteded her host kids’ weddings! I think that’s so cool and I’m excited to form a close bond with a family across the world.

I worked as a babysitter for 2,5 years in high school. I cared for a 6-year-old boy and a 10-year-old girl. My duties included walking the kids home from school, preparing after school snacks and sometimes lunch/dinner, helping with homework and preparing activities. We did a lot of outdoor activies, such as going to the park/playground, doing sports or playing in the backyard, but also indoor acitives such as reading, doing arts and crafts, baking, playing board games and playing imaginary games. Growing up I often babysat my youngest brother. I had the same duties as above. I've also been babysitting multiple kids of family friends occasionally. During my education I’ve had an apprenticeship as a school psychologist for 3 months. I worked with kids in the age range 6-18 years old. I performed neuropsychological assessments to evaluate if they had ADHD, ADD, autism or mental handicaps. I also worked with their families and school staff by providing advice on how to best support the kids based on their diagnosis. I’ve volunteered at orphanages. My main duties were to prepare snacks and plan and perform activities inside and outside.

Prior to my studies I've worked as carer for two young adults. I cared for a woman with Down syndrome and a man with a brain damage. The man was also in a wheelchair. I assisted them in their daily lives and helped them follow routines. I helped them with personal hygiene, cooking, grocery shopping, exercising and came along on their daily acitivities. I assisted them in social situations by helping them communicate. Both of them lived at home with their parents, so I have experience with working in a family setting and know the importance of for example good and open communication.

I would describe myself as a very warm, emphatic and caring person. I truly care about people and enjoy helping others. I’m also very responsible, mature and organized. I’d say my patience is one of my biggest strengths. I handle stressful and difficult situations well and always stay calm. I’m active and social and like being around people. I’m also creative and think it’s fun to come up with new ideas and activities.
