Letter of motivation to become an Au Pair

I will be starting my 4-year medical degree with the Royal Navy in late August. This will essentially represent the beginning of my lifelong career, which means that this summer that is coming up now may be the last free summer that I ever have. I want to make it count. I have always wanted to learn a (3rd) language and so I think that it would help massively to move to another country. What drew me to teaching and Au Pair work specifically was wanting to do something that actually mattered to me. I am, unashamedly, a British patriot who loves my countries culture and history. I have always had a keen interest in foreign cultures (as do all true-to-form Brits), and what better way to experience a foreign culture than living in a foreign country? I already did so in the Americas and Africa and I absolutely loved it! I am a very easygoing person with no special requirements. I am not fussy about my accommodation at all – it's the experience that counts for me! Secondly, I don’t just want to be the kind of Brit who travels abroad, consumes but does not give anything, or very much, in return – something that the British *may* have done in their history to one or two countries. I want to give back to my host country. I have always enjoyed teaching and spending time with small children, so being an Au Pair seems like a natural role for me. It is always rewarding to me on a personal level to see how my hard work has helped improve somebody else’s life. This is true even more so for children, their youth makes them impressionable, and this means that it is much easier to impart life skills and attitudes that will not only shape their character but also have the potential to stay with them for many years. What a dream it would be to not only see a child develop their conversational English skills but to also be able to quote Mitchell and Webb (“Our caps. They’ve got skulls on them”). Expect yourselves to be inundated with BBC comedies.

In terms of my qualifications I have worked in a nursery for several months and spent considerable time looking after my own nieces and nephews – all of whom are newborns. I have a masters degree from Imperial College London and have been accepted to study accelerate medicine. The entrance for this course is extremely competitive in that less that 1 in 10 applicants succeed – so I am quite proud of myself! I also have extensive volunteering experience with both disabled people and those with substance abuse issues. I have always enjoyed work that helps others and gives back to the community.
