Letter to the family

Dear Host Family,

My name is Mayra, but everyone calls me May. I’m 24 years old, originally from Colombia, and currently living in Istanbul, Turkey, where I’ve been working as an Au Pair for the past six months. This experience has been incredibly enriching and has allowed me to grow in ways I never imagined, both personally and professionally. I recently graduated with a degree in Architecture, and I’m currently navigating the exciting transition into my professional life while continuing to explore and learn from the world around me.

Being an Au Pair in Istanbul has given me the chance to deepen my connection with children while also experiencing a new culture firsthand. During these six months, I’ve strengthened my ability to adapt to different family dynamics, learned to communicate across cultural differences, and developed even more patience and creativity when it comes to engaging with children. In my free time, I try to stay connected to my career by learning, drawing, and exploring anything that can help me continue growing as a creative and future architect. I see this chapter of my life as part of a larger adventure, one where I’m discovering not just what kind of professional I want to be, but also the kind of person I strive to become.

A year ago, I had the amazing opportunity to do an internship in Lyon, France. That experience marked a turning point for me, not only in my academic path but also in how I view cultural exchange and personal development. It was so inspiring and meaningful that it sparked a deep desire to return to France and continue building those connections. Living abroad has also fueled my passion for languages and cross-cultural communication, something I truly enjoy and continue to pursue wherever I go.

I’m looking forward to bringing all that I’ve learned in these past experiences into a new chapter in France, where I hope to offer not just support, but also joy, creativity, and a genuine sense of connection to the family I’ll be part of.

Experience

I’ve had the opportunity to work as an Au Pair for the past six months, and it has been one of the most enriching and transformative experiences of my life. Living with a family, being part of their daily routine, and caring for their children has allowed me not only to learn more about a new culture but also about myself. It’s been a beautiful challenge that has helped me grow in patience, empathy, and flexibility, qualities I’ve come to value even more in this role.

As the youngest of three siblings, I grew up always being the little one in the house. Taking on the role of a “big sister” figure for the first time has been surprisingly special for me. It has allowed me to explore a different side of myself: one that is nurturing, protective, and able to guide and support others. Stepping into that role and being someone that children can rely on has been both humbling and fulfilling. It has shown me how powerful small moments of care and connection can be in someone else’s life.

What I’ve enjoyed the most is seeing how simply being present and intentional can positively impact the children and families I’ve worked with. That sense of contribution and emotional connection is something I truly value and strive to bring into every space I’m part of.

I want to continue as an Au Pair abroad because I see this path as more than just a cultural exchange. It’s an opportunity to build meaningful relationships, share who I am, and keep learning from different ways of living. After experiencing this in Turkey, I feel even more excited about continuing this journey in another country, where I can offer the best of myself while also embracing everything a new culture has to teach me.
