Letter to the family

Hi there, I'm Sophie! I recently graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in History, and currently work at the University with local school pupils to educate them about university and other further education pathways.

I've always loved working with children. At 16, I began informally tutoring primary-school students local to me, and during my degree studies I worked part-time as a tutor for children from the ages of 4-14. I've always enjoyed babysitting and looking after younger children too, from neighbours' children, younger cousins, and paid babysitting jobs. I find working with children incredibly rewarding. Their joy, playfulness and enthusiasm for life is infectious. It's also incredibly rewarding to watch them learn and grow, taking on new abilities and skills as they get older and learn from those around them. I've always been told that I have a very natural caring instinct when it comes to children, which I use to create supportive, fun, playful and empathetic relationships with children and young people.

I'd love to become an au pair or live-in tutor not only because I love children and working with them, but because I am at a point in my life where it feels right. I am due to finish my Graduate Internship working with children at the end of July, and I want to travel whilst I'm still young, as my late mother did in her youth as an au pair. I grew up hearing her stories of working in France, Switzerland, and Canada, and stories of her relationships with the children she cared for and remained in touch with were beautiful and inspiring. It is absolutely something I want to experience for myself, whilst I'm not yet tied down by a career or family of my own.

I'm a fun and easy-going person; I love playing games and find it easy to relate my child-like spirit to children. I love to spend time outdoors, getting muddy and experiencing nature. I love animals too, so pets at a potential stay would only ever be a plus for me! I love to learn new things; going to museums and galleries to experience culture is one of my favourite pastimes, and I've exhausted all the ones local to me.

I speak fluent English, very basic Spanish, and am looking to learn another language based on where I could stay - I really want to immerse myself in a new culture to learn it's language and ways.

My experience, personality, and background would, I feel, make me a great au pair - I'd love to get started on my au pair journey this summer! Feel free to drop me a message if you'd like to know more about me, what I'm looking for, or my experience! :)

Experience

I don't yet have any experience as an au-pair or live-in tutor, but I have plenty of experience of working with and building supportive, playful, empathic relationships with children of all ages.

I worked for several months as a tutor in 2022 with a company called Explore Learning here in the UK, where I supported children in their learning, but also in a pastoral sense too. In my current work, I also work with and support high-school children. My dream though is to work with children and toddlers aged 0-7, as this is what I have always found the most rewarding in the past. From hearing about my mother's experiences as an au pair when I was younger, I know I would be suited to the role and would love a chance to get started.

About me

I'm a big reader, and love to read all sorts of things, from literary fiction, classics, and modern or contemporary fiction. I also really enjoy creative pursuits, such as drawing, painting, sculpting, collage and more! I love to watch plays, movies, and documentaries too. I'm also casually learning Spanish - I studied this in school from the ages of 12-16 but was unable to continue it in further education, so now I continue this in my personal life. I also try not to spend too much time on my phone; I like to be present with whoever I'm with or whatever hobby I'm doing, which is something I think is important when working with children, to lead by example and build healthy relationships with the world and people around us. I also enjoy running, cycling, singing, and going for walks out in nature. I especially love combining my love for creativity and the outdoors where possible, building huts from sticks or wild swimming!
