Letter to the family

Hello!
My name is Ashley, I’m 17 years old, and currently a senior in high school in the United States. As the eldest child in my family, I have always taken on responsibilities caring for my younger sister, which naturally grew into a love for looking after children.

For the past five years, I’ve spent my summers volunteering and working at youth camps, and for the past year I’ve been a nanny for a wonderful family with a three-year-old boy. I’ve spent hundreds of hours caring for him, keeping him safe, happy, and entertained. Kids tend to warm up to me quickly, and I truly enjoy creating fun, meaningful connections with them. Along with childcare, I also help with light cooking and cleaning, so the household runs smoothly. Sadly, the family is moving, and I am now looking forward to my next adventure as an au pair.

I would describe myself as responsible, trustworthy, and caring, but also fun, creative, and full of energy. I love coming up with games, activities, and crafts that keep children engaged and learning. At the same time, I know how important safety and structure are, so I make sure children feel both secure and supported.

Safety is something I take very seriously. I am CPR certified, trained in the Heimlich maneuver, and have knowledge of basic first aid. I am also a strong swimmer, having passed the lifeguard test, so families can feel confident that their children are safe with me in all kinds of situations.

Even though I am 17, I believe my experience speaks for itself. I have been trusted by both families and camp organizations to care for children of different ages, and I always approach the role with maturity, patience, and enthusiasm. Families who choose me will get someone who is hardworking, dependable, and excited to truly be part of their family.

Outside of childcare, I love surfing, hiking, pottery, cooking, and exploring new places. I’m excited by the idea of experiencing a new culture, helping children grow, and creating lasting memories with my host family.

Experience

Over the past year, I have been a nanny for a three-year-old boy with developmental delays and limited speech. He is energetic, mischievous, and has been asked to leave several preschools, so his parents needed someone patient and consistent. I spent 10-14 hours each week with him, not only keeping him safe and engaged but also working on his speech, colors, and basic skills. It has been incredibly rewarding to watch him grow and learn with encouragement and structure.

In addition to nannying, I have spent five summers helping at youth camps including dance camp, surf camp, and woodshop camp where I cared for groups of children, kept them safe, and led them through activities that built confidence and creativity. These experiences gave me the chance to handle a wide range of personalities from shy and quiet kids to bold and adventurous ones.

I would like to become an Au Pair abroad because it combines everything I love: working with children, being part of a family, and exploring new places. For me, it’s not just about caring for kids, but also about cultural exchange and learning from others, sharing my own traditions, and creating bonds that last long after my stay.
