Welcome Letter to the Au Pair

Dear Future Housemate,

We are a Hungarian-Dutch family with two children. The older is a boy, turning 12 in the summer, the little one is a girl and she's going to be 6 in a couple of days.

We live near Place Dumon, which is a good little town center in the eastern corner of Brussels. The neighborhood is tidy and safe, with lots of parks and air nearby. Metro is about 6 minutes on foot but tram and bus also within walking distance. The school is a 15 minute walk, or 5 min by bike or car. You can reach the city centre in about 20-25 min.

The reason why we need help is, beside being a freshly single parent, that my working days are long during the week, and I want to rest assured that the children are in good hands while I can't be with them. We have a good relationship with the father of the children, hence, evetually, if I have to go away for a couple of days for work, he can come over and help out and so can my parents come from Hungary if needed.

We used to have au pairs since several years and we are still in touch with most of them. The reason why we chose to have au pairs was that we don't consider this relationship as an employment but better having an older sister to my kids. They are really got used to having help around and since we are living in an international enviromnent, their interpersonal and language skills are higher than of the kids at their age. They both speak quite good English. Their mother tongues are Hungarian and Dutch, since i'm Hungarian their dad is from the Netherlands.

What we have to offer: First of all, we would love to welcome you in our family, if you're up for it. We don't want to be overwhelming, and will respect your privacy, but we would be happy to share our adventures, meals and conversations with you. A separate room and a second bathroom would be at your disposal. If you are interested in languages and culture, Brussels is the place for you. Many expats live here and there are also online communities, so it’s not hard to find friends if you want to.

Who we are looking for: an enthusiastic, good-natured and reliable girl who understands children's language and loves to spend quality time with them.

What you could help us with: Prepare them for school in the morning and going to pick them up in the afternoon as well as to occupy them after school helping them doing the home work, to play with them if needed and taking them to their after school activities. Compared to their age, they both are quite smart and most of the time it is really easy to get along with them. During the day, a little tidying up, maybe a small shopping always comes handy, but we are not looking for a housekeeper (We have a cleaning lady coming every week, and we also try our best to keep the house organized). You could also follow a language course or do the things you like during the day.

I consider this relationship built on kindness and mutual respect and we can figure out together what suits best for all of us.

Thank you for reading and I hope to meet you soon!

Job Description

As mentioned, we are not looking for a housekeeper but more like a new family member, who we can share our experiences, meals and time together with, if you wish to participate. Beside the basic tasks described above, we would be happy to involve you in our family activities or just leave you in peace, if you wish so. Most of our au pairs were having a language cours during their stay two times a week and a little help with arranging our home or doing some small errands are always appreciated. Beside your daily tasks, you’d have time for yourself to discover Brussels and even Belgium is you wish to do so, both can be quite interesting and rich of nature and cultural experience, not to mention the night life, which can be also very tempting :)
