Letter to the family

Dear families,

My name is Maya, I'm from the east coast of Canada, in Halifax, Nova Scotia. I'm currently in my first year of university, and I am hoping to au pair between the end of this school year and the beginning of my next school year. I am studying history with the eventual goal of becoming a teacher or professor. Outside of school I have had a few different jobs to fund my education. I've worked at an over-night summer camp for the past three summers taking care of the children as a camp counsellor and more recently as the first aider (camp nurse). I have also taught swimming lessons and been a lifeguard for just over 3 years now. I love working with kids, I think their creativity and fun energy is contagious! I'm hopeful that through this experience I can gain new perspective through amercing myself in cultures different from my own. I'm excited to try new things and explore, while also maintaining responsibility and routine through my duties as an au pair.

Experience

I have been a swim instructor for children over the last 3 years. This includes infants all the way to youth around 13. Additionally, I have experience with children who have physical or mental disabilities through this as I taught 1:1 swimming lessons through my local pools inclusion aquatics program. (I am happy to answer any more detailed questions about my experience in this area)

For the past three summers I have also worked at sleep away summer camp. For the first two years I was a camp counsellor. This meant I looked after arounds 8 kids almost 24/7 for 5 nights per week, ranging in ages 51-16. I was responsible for their safety and care-- making sure they were taking care of themselves (ie personal hygiene), and also making sure the kids were happy and having a good time. This most recent summer I was the camp first aider (camp nurse). I was in charge when it came to any illnesses or injuries, using my first aid training to ensure everyone on site was looked after. I also administered all medications.

In addition to these work experiences I have been baby sitting casually over the past 5 years for ages 6 months-12 years old. I also have volunteer experience in a nursery for ages 6 months- 5 years old
