Letter to the family

Dear Host Family,
Hello! My name is Shanika, I'm 18 years old and from New Zealand. I'm writing to say how excited I am about the possibility of joining your family as an au pair.

I love working with children and being part of their learning and growth. For the past five years, I’ve worked as a lifeguard, and for almost four years, I’ve been a swim instructor — helping children of all ages learn to swim safely and confidently. These roles have taught me how to stay calm under pressure, be patient, and adapt to different personalities and needs.

I also hold a Pre-Hospital Emergency Care (PHEC) certificate, which gives me advanced first aid knowledge, including how to manage emergencies and keep children safe in all kinds of situations.

Outside of work, I’m very active and love staying fit. I’m a competitive swimmer, play netball, and compete in surf lifesaving, which keeps me strong, disciplined, and confident in the water. These activities have also taught me teamwork, leadership, and how to encourage others — especially kids!

I want to become an au pair because I’m excited to experience a new culture, be part of a family’s everyday life, and contribute in a meaningful way. I enjoy being outdoors, playing games, and creating positive, engaging routines. I’d love to help with things like school runs, playtime, mealtimes, and even swimming if you’d like!

I consider myself reliable, warm, respectful, and easy to get along with. I’d be thrilled to bring positive energy to your home, while also learning from your culture and way of life.

Thank you so much for considering me. I’d love the opportunity to get to know your family better and answer any questions you might have.

Warm wishes,
Shanika

Experience

Becoming an au pair abroad is something I feel deeply passionate about because it brings together many of the things I value most: connection, purpose, learning, and adventure.

I want to be part of a family’s everyday life — not as a visitor, but as someone who contributes with care and consistency. The idea of being a positive role model, like a big sister figure to children, really appeals to me. I love the thought of helping with morning routines, playing games, supporting learning, and sharing calm, joyful moments throughout the day.

At the same time, I’m excited by the opportunity to experience life in a new country — to immerse myself in another culture, learn the language, and understand the rhythm of a different way of living. I believe that kind of cultural exchange builds understanding and personal growth in a way no classroom ever could.

I’m also drawn to the idea of making a real difference in a family’s life. Whether it’s helping with school pick-ups, preparing meals, or simply being a dependable and caring presence, I want to be helpful in ways that truly matter.

For me, being an au pair isn’t just about travel — it’s about being part of something meaningful. I want to give my energy, warmth, and effort to a family, while gaining the kind of life experience that shapes who I am and who I want to become.
