Letter to the family

Dear Host Family,

My name is Juliette, I’m 18 and currently studying biomedicine at the University of Melbourne. I’ve just finished my first semester, but before diving too deep into something like medicine, I want to take some time to step back, experience something different, and grow in ways that uni can’t really offer.

Becoming an au pair feels like the perfect chance to do that. I’ve always loved being around kids and helping out in family life — I grew up in a big family of seven, and now that my siblings have all moved out, I honestly miss the everyday noise and connection. I’d love to be part of that again, even if it’s in someone else’s home across the world.

I’m a warm, reliable, and easygoing person who genuinely enjoys being helpful. I’ve volunteered with children through SUFM in Portland, running games and activities, and I enjoy getting involved — whether that’s making dinner, playing outside, or helping with homework.

I’m also really excited to improve my French. My dad is French, and I have family in the south of France as well as a cousin in Geneva. Being able to speak the language better and connect with them (and with you!) is something I’m really looking forward to.

Experience

I’ve volunteered for two years with SUFM (Scripture Union Family Mission) in Portland, Victoria, helping lead games and outdoor activities for children in a family-focused Christian setting. It gave me hands-on experience working with kids and taught me how to create a fun, safe, and caring environment.

As the youngest in a big family of seven, I’ve always loved being surrounded by people. Now that my siblings are older and moving out, I really miss being part of that everyday family life. Becoming an au pair feels like a natural fit — a way to help a family, build new connections, and step into something meaningful.

I'm taking time off from my biomedicine degree to explore new experiences and reconnect with my European roots. My dad is French, my mum grew up in Germany, and I’ve spent a lot of time overseas. I especially miss the lifestyle — nature, shared meals, culture — and one of my biggest goals is to become fluent in French. I have family in the south of France and a cousin in Geneva, and I’d love to communicate more confidently with them.
