Welcome Letter to the Au Pair

Greetings! We are a family of three, dad, mom and a one year old toddler in Canada! We are a missionary family seeking a missionary au pair who can share in our daily routine. We are Seventh-day Adventist Christians. We are currently stay at home parents since bringing home our little one from the nicu. An au pair would allow us to have time to work on our mission focused not-for-profit work to spread bread and the Word locally. While we have one son and hope to grow we wish to invite an au pair into our home to have more interaction and helping hands.

For fun we like to watch YouTube vlogs, children’s educational programs, church programs and general topics of interest to us. We watch limited cable tv programs such as reality tv hgtv home shows. We don’t really watch cartoons in this house!

For recreation we like to have games nights with friends, go to parks or local waterfronts here in Canada. We are purposefully social and like to do Bible studies with our friends and at home, which is also related to the mission work we do.

As practicing Seventh-day adventists our routine is to rest weekly on the Sabbath from Friday sunset to Saturday sunset. We currently live in a home in the city but are planning to relocate to a country home and have a self-sustaining lifestyle with gardening, milling and bakery.

We are looking for an au pair who is mission-minded to role model to our son, and travel with us when our work takes us on day-trips to attend local markets. Our ideal au pair is trust-worthy, open communicator, patient, attentive and playful to be able to do lots of play activities with our child. We love to help others, and desire an au pair with the same attitude of selflessness. We are looking for a cultural exchange with an au pair and to learn from him or her too. Any unique homemaking skills that our au pair has in sewing, gardening, carpentry or working with animals on a farm are skills that we would love to learn from.

After spending many months with our child in the NICU when he was born prematurely we are recovering as a family and are looking for a missionary au pair who is not just au pairing for the money. We are looking for a cultural exchange with an au pair and to learn any unique skills from our au pair such as sewing, gardening or working with animals on a farm are skills that we would love to learn from.

Besides pocket money, the things we have to offer an au pair is a comfortable space, respect, rest on weekends and evenings and teaching skills to our au pair as interested: such as bread making, plant-based meals, mentorship in career and life planning as former working engineers and in doing self-supporting mission work.

The difference in our lives that we expect from having au pair: is more activity for our son and motivation for our family to have more vacations to take more driving trips through Canada and USA that we would include our au pair as they wish and are permitted to travel (for USA).

The difference we hope to make in an au pair’s life: preparing to reach life goals through our mentorship, meeting new people in Canada as we are active in local churches, travelling to sites in our province of Ontario and nearby province of Quebec, such as Montreal/Quebec City/Ottawa/Niagara Falls/Blue Mountains. If we are fortunate we hope to travel to further sites by driving outside province and USA.

Job Description

Our au pairs work day would be 9am to 5pm Monday-Thursday and end earlier on Fridays (e.g. 9am to 2pm). Sabbaths (Saturday) and Sundays would be off for the au pair. Sundays we would normally not ask for help, but may from time to time ask if it works for the au pair as well. Our au pair’s amount of weekly hours would be 40 hours normally and up to 45 hours on rare occasions. We would provide our au pair with 3 weeks vacation in the year and are flexible as our au pair has needs. We would like an au pair interested in staying for 12 months.

Our expectations for our au pair would be to join our son for breakfast. As he is a toddler we would like him to get outside for a morning walk or play outside in the yard. We like to do Montessori style education with him consisting mostly of play to learn new skills in eating new foods, talking and develop his motor skills. We would like our au pair to participate in lunch meal times to assist our son to adopt solid foods while in his high chair. We would want our au pair to assist him to take a 1-2 naps daily. When not available during the day host parents would care for son. This would free our au pair to assist us with some chores such as tidying up our son's room and common areas, laundry for our son's clothes and household linens, dusting/sweeping and mopping common area floors since our son loves to crawl every where and keeping the au pair's bedroom tidy.

Besides housing and meals we plan to be provide our au pair with:
$100 pocket money per week
a bus pass for the local transportation,
fund a language course for English or French (if not spoken already)
provide local driving school training to be comfortable (only if au pair already has a driving license), and
provide a SIM card for phone

We hope to relocate to a rural location within the next year. Once we are relocated we intend to provide access to a vehicle depending on the driving experience of our au pair. For personal excursions our au pair would be responsible for gas.

We would prefer an au pair willing to eat the same diet while inside our home. We are primarily a vegetarian family with use of eggs and some fish and we observe clean and unclean meats, so we would never want pork, shell fish, etc. in our home. We don’t store raw meat in our refrigerator besides some fish. We do not consume or keep alcohol or recreational drugs in the home. Modest dress in our home and around our family is important for us.
