This article gathers all the important information about the Au Pair contract and insurance.

The Au Pair contract

The Au Pairs and Host families have to sign a contract. Make sure you have talked about all your duties and responsibilities in order to avoid misunderstandings and problems during the stay. The contract should include your specific tasks, working hours, holidays and many more points.

Here is a quick overview of what to include in the contract:
We always recommend to use our Au Pair contract as a template. We offer our Premium Member Host Families another template that contains more specific information, in order to cover every aspect of the stay.. The contract will also be necessary to apply for a visa and might even be controlled at the Canadian border.

Termination of the contract

If the Host Family and the Au Pair want to terminate their cooperation earlier than agreed, we recommend to give a notice period of 2 weeks. This will give the participant and the Host Family enough time to find a new match or even a solution for the problem that has occurred.

The Au Pair insurance

Health insurance and other insurances are important for the stay and should be taken care of before the Au Pair arrives to Canada.

Health insurance in Canada

It is important to have an insurance that covers everything, in case the Au Pair becomes sick or even has an accident in Canada. We also recommend to consider the options that cover dental as well as complex problems that can occur during the stay.

Usually the Au Pair should pay for the insurance. However, it is up to the Au Pair to ask the Host Family if they will help to pay for it.

While choosing an insurance, you can also consider Dr. Walter or Care Concept, which offer Au Pair insurances all over the world.

Car insurance and driving license

Many Au Pairs are expected to drive a car in Canada to pick up the kids or bring them to school. A car is also pretty useful for the Au Pair’s free time or to attend the language course. Usually Host Families let their Au Pair use the car. It is important that the Host Family’s car insurance company knows about that.

Au Pairs can drive a car in Canada with their driver’s license and an international driver’s license for some time. However, they should get the Canadian driver’s license as soon as possible. For that matter, they will have to take a driving test. Specific regulations about this can be found on the website of the government of Canada.
