Letter to the family

Hi ! My name is Brooke and I am a Jacksonville, Florida USA native. I was thrilled to accept my admissions to University 2020 where I would continue my education as a health promotion major with double minors in both global health and hospital management.

My love for healthcare stems from my roots as a daughter of both an ObGyn and postpartum nurse. In fact, one of my favorite stories to tell is the time I realized I wanted to be in the healthcare field. It was when I was 13: the first time I saw a baby being delivered. My dad was supposed to be taking me to my soccer game, when instead he got a call from the hospital that one of his patients needed an emergency c-section. Instead of arriving at the field by 9 am , we took a little detour. But my dad, being my dad, did not have me wait in the car, he thought it would be a good idea to have me scrub up. No less than 15 minutes later, I witnessed the birth of a child. That was just the beginning. After that, I began dedicating my high school summers to Baptist South Hospital in Jacksonville, as a hospital volunteer in the foundation department as well as a board member to Pediatric Hospice in Jacksonville, Florida.

While I love healthcare, I have always had a deep interest in caring for children and elderly individuals. I've always had a natural affinity for caring for others, whether they're children or the elderly. My inherent kindness, warmth, and genuine niceness create a nurturing environment where everyone feels valued and loved. With children, I find joy in sparking their curiosity, playing games, and helping them learn and grow. I approach caregiving for the elderly with the same compassion, ensuring they feel comfortable, respected, and cherished. My ability to connect on a personal level, coupled with my patience and understanding, makes me well-suited for providing care to both children and the elderly, enriching their lives with love and support.

Experience

In the past, I have worked as a geriatric caretaker. In this position, my key responsibilities included :

Personal Care - Maintained a clean and organized living environment, ensuring the safety and comfort of the elderly individual.
Communication and Emotional Support - Fostered a meaningful relationship with an elderly individual, offering companionship and emotional support.
Mobility Assistance - Aid in mobility and transfers, using proper lifting and transfer techniques to ensure the safety of seniors. Responsible for driving to and from doctors visits.

Additionally, I have spent several summer nannying and working in childcare. During my high school years, I worked at a daycare, taking care of children from 6 months old to 12 years old. In 2022, I even worked as a nanny for a 3 year old girl for 4 months over summer. I also sometimes spend weekends babysitting for local families near my University.

However, I would love to use this summer to become an au pair caregiver or nanny abroad for many reasons. Firstly, it offers a unique blend of cultural immersion, personal growth, and valuable childcare experience. Living with a host family in a foreign country allows me to immerse myself in a new language and culture, gaining invaluable insights and broadening my perspectives. Additionally, working closely with children enables me to develop essential skills in childcare, responsibility, and patience. Moreover, the opportunity to travel and explore a new country during my free time enriches my life experiences and creates lasting memories. Overall, being an au pair nanny abroad promises to be a fulfilling and enriching experience that combines travel, cultural exchange, and professional development - while simultaneously catering to my interests of working with children.

Since coming to college, I have found numerous ways to increase my involvement with not only the University I attend, but also the community. One of my most notable experiences was Summer and Fall 2023 at a hospital. At the hospital I worked as a marketing intern, actively contributing to the hospital's marketing initiatives, all while gaining valuable experience in the healthcare industry. During this time I had 7 articles published on their website. Additionally, just this past semester I began working with a Clinic to develop policies in order to promote the care and services they offer to the greater good of the community. I think being able to work aborad in a place unfamiliar to me could give me a new and different perspective, and allow me to continue to grow in my understanding of different cultures.
