Letter to the family

Dear Host Family,

Hello. My name is Hiroka. I am 27 years old, born in Sapporo, Hokkaido, and raised in Kanagawa, Japan. I studied food science at university and hold certifications as a Food Specialist and a Food Hygiene Supervisor. After graduating, I mainly worked in roles where I introduced and shared aspects of Japanese food culture.

Over time, I developed a strong desire to step outside of Japan and immerse myself in different cultures, values, and ways of life. Through meeting many people from various backgrounds, I wanted to broaden my perspective and grow as a person, which led me to the decision to become an au pair. Rather than learning in a classroom, I’m drawn to learning through real-life experiences—by living with local families and spending time with children in their everyday lives.

Experience

Currently, I’m living in France near the Swiss border, working as an au pair for a family with a 9-year-old girl and an 11-year-old boy. I speak English with the host mother and Japanese with the host father and children. I find great joy in sharing culture through everyday interactions, such as mealtimes and family routines.

Whether with children or adults, I always try to see things from the other person’s point of view and respond with flexibility and a positive attitude. I believe that respecting and embracing cultural and individual differences is key to building good relationships.

After one year of experience as an au pair, I feel confident in my ability to support a host family not only with daily routines, but also by sharing language and culture in practical, meaningful ways.
