Au Pair requirements in the Netherlands for EU citizens

According to Official Regulations, the Au Pair program in the Netherlands is only available through designated Au Pair agencies. As an EU citizen you will only need to meet some basic requirements to become an Au Pair in the Netherlands:
  1. Age: 18 - 24 years 
  2. Valid passport to register at the foreigners office
  3. Unmarried and without children or foster children (confirmed by single status declaration and their own statement of non-parenthood)

Register and create a profile on AuPair.com. Browse through the profiles of potential Host Families and send them a message.

Contact a local agency
Contact a local recognized agency and start the arrangements needed to become a participant of the program.

Sign the contract and get insured
Arrange a video-call with the Host Family and discuss the contract in details. Sign it before the start date of your Au Pair program! Also to take care of your insurance in the Netherlands

Get ready to travel 
Plan everything for your trip and make the proper arrangements with the Host Family.

Register
EU/EFTA Au Pairs also need to register at the local office after their arrival in the Netherlands.

 

Au Pair requirements in the Netherlands for Non-EU citizens

Nationals of Non-European Union countries will need a visa to participate in the Au Pair program. Official Regulations establish that the program in the Netherlands is only available via an approved Au Pair agency which will be in charge of informing you about the specific requirements according to your nationality. The general requirements in the Netherlands are as follows:
  • Age: between 18 - 24 at the time of applying for the visa
  • Not related to the Host Family  
  • Au Pair contract
  • Health insurance
  • Valid passport
  • You can cover your visa and travel expenses
  • You have never held a residence permit for exchange purposes in the Netherlands before
  • You have not worked for a Host Family in the Netherlands or abroad before
  • Unmarried and without children or foster children (confirmed by single status declaration and their own statement of non-parenthood)
Remember to get in touch with the embassy of the Netherlands in your home country to find out the specific requirements and make an appointment.

Become an Au Pair in the Netherlands by following these simple steps:

Register and create a profile
Register on AuPair.com and create a profile. You can find your Host Family through our platform. Do not forget that you will need to be assisted by an agency.

Passport 
Check the validity of your passport and make sure it covers the full length of your stay.

Register with a recognised Au Pair agency
Register with a recognised Au Pair agency and gather the documentation needed to be an Au Pair in the Netherlands.  Sign the official contract with your Host Family.

Insurance
Travel safely! It is mandatory for you to you have medical insurance while living in the Netherlands. In some cases you will need to arrange this after the arrival at the country. The Host Family normally covers the costs of the insurance, nevertheless, we also recommend to purchase an additional insurance before the trip.

Visa appointment
Make an appointment at the Dutch embassy in your home country and present the required documents for the visa

Travel to your Host Country

Register - residence permit
Remember to register at the local office within the first two weeks after your arrival to transform the visa into a residence permit. Official Authorities will contact the Au Pair agency to inform them that the residence permit is ready.
