In order to be part of the
Au Pair program in the Netherlands, families and Au Pairs will need to get an official contract from one of the agencies or exchange organisations approved by the IND (Immigratie en Naturalisatiedienst). Some important points the contract should include are:
Termination of the contract
In some cases, Au Pairs and Host Families do not meet each others’ expectations or the cultural differences are just too big. When they cannot solve these situations, they might choose to terminate the contract.
After making this decision, both parties have a two week notice period during which they need to continue the work relation as friendly as possible. They will also need to look for a new Family or Au Pair. Keep in mind that if the participant came to the Netherlands on the Au Pair
visa and they do not find a Host Family during this period, the Au Pair will have to return home.
Au Pairs from the European Union are entitled to the
European Health Insurance Card during their stay. Au Pairs from other countries will have to contract a private health insurance company. In any case, the Netherlands’ health system has some specific conditions worth mentioning.
Health insurance for EEA citizens in the Netherlands
EU citizens are entitled to emergency medical attention in the Netherlands. It is important to consider that even with the EHIC it is possible that Au Pairs have to pay part of the treatment in advance or through contributions. In some cases, the Zilveren Kruis (responsible for Health Care in the Netherlands) may only reimburse part of the treatment.
In order to avoid problems or additional fees please check that the health provider has a contract with the Zilveren Kruis. Even if it is not mandatory, we strongly recommend to purchase an additional private insurance to guarantee a safe stay.
Health insurance for the non-EEA citizens in the Netherlands
Au Pairs from non European Union member countries need to have a private health insurance. This cost is normally covered by the Host Family and is even considered an obligation by some agencies. Normally it is possible to get an insurance within 4 months after the Au Pair’s arrival in the Netherlands.
AuPair.com has several partners, that offer insurance services for Au Pairs from all over the world. Read more about

Car insurance and driving license
Although the Netherlands is the land of the bikes, some Au Pairs are required to drive a car during their stay. If the participant has a valid licence from a European Union country issued after 2013, then they will be able to drive with it as long as it is valid.
If the Au Pair has a non-EU driver’s
license, then they can drive in the Netherlands for a maximum of six months. Then they might have to undergo different examinations. The Au Pair agency should be able to provide you with more information according to your nationality.
Make sure the insurance covers car accidents and always talk about traffic rules and regulations.
