Welcome Letter to the Au Pair

Hello! We're expecting twins this winter - first-time parents! We both work. Jake is a computer engineer working in video games, and Nicole is a registered nurse working in the ICU in a hospital in downtown Seattle. We're looking forward to finding an au pair who can help us navigate this new world of caring for babies.

We own our home, and we are in the midst of building an addition for extra space. We have enough bedrooms already for an au pair to join our house, but an addition will be a big help and will include a small kitchen in addition to our existing kitchen. NOTE - there may be a period of overlap during which the au pair would live in the house during construction.

Our home is just inside the city limits of Seattle. It's about a 10-minute drive without traffic into the city center (traffic is highly variable and can add anywhere from 5-30 minutes). We are located close to bus route 346, which can take you to the train at Northgate Station. In Autumn 2024, a much closer train station will open within walking distance, and it will be possible to get from that station to downtown Seattle in under 20 minutes.

Our neighborhood is safe and friendly, and close to lots of shopping options. There are multiple language centers within 3 miles of our house (20 minutes or less by bicycle).

Job Description

We mostly need help filling in the gaps where we won't be able to spend time with the twins. This is especially during working hours or overnight. Because Nicole works night-shift, she is often at work overnight, or sleeping during the day as she switches back to daytime waking hours.

The ideal candidate would be willing to be flexible with our somewhat unpredictable schedule. We're very organized people who plan thoroughly. We will make sure you are comfortable, taken care of, and enjoy yourself. We are very caring folks, and we want someone who cares as much about our family as we will care for you. We are looking for someone who is respectful and clean, caring, and not too serious :)

The job would include typical infant care. We would also expect this person to assist with cleaning and house upkeep, which we will also do alongside you. This will be a partnership with us - we aren't looking for someone to come in and do all of our work for us. Just as we'll be dedicated to helping you, we want you to be dedicated to helping us where you can. The ideal candidate would be a person who proactively searches for ways to help rather than needing to be told what to do.

We will be a safe space for you. We'd love to be responsible for making this a wonderful experience in a new place, and we're excited to bring you into our home and into the Seattle area!

Accommodation

The au pair would have access to the guest bathroom. This bathroom is used by guests when visiting, so it should remain generally clean, but the au pair would not be sharing the bathroom with others aside from normal toilet usage.

The au pair will have a private bedroom with a closet and a ceiling fan. The closet is large, but is also used for storage, so occasionally Jake or Nicole may need access to one side of the closet.

Jake is very technically savvy, so the house has excellent internet and wifi (gigabit speeds). The house is outfitted with smart technology, so all of the lights in the house are automated, as well as the security system and the door locks. It's very cool.
