Welcome Letter to the Au Pair

Dear Future Au Pair,

My name is Allie, and my husband is Tom. We met at our undergraduate university, the University of California, Berkeley. We were together just shy of 10 years before finally getting married. We love Seattle because of the down-to-earth people, the great food, and, most importantly, the great outdoors. From snow sports to camping, we love it all. For work, my husband is an engineer, and I work on the business side. He loves to solve problems and build. I am a crafter making jewelry, taking photos and more. We are each other’s best friends, and we seamlessly complement each other.

We are about to have our first kid, (we don’t know gender or name yet) due April 22, 2024. We are looking for an au pair to start in the fall of 2024 when our child is six months old. We are looking for someone who is comfortable taking care of an infant and willing to help around the home, whether picking up toys or doing occasional laundry for the child.

We live in the Green Lake neighborhood centrally located in the city of Seattle, and our house is located across the street from a beautiful park with a lake in the middle and a great running route around it. Seattle is the largest metropolitan city in the Pacific Northwest, with some of the best coffee (birthplace of Starbucks), busy waterfronts, excellent seafood, stunning views of mountains, water, and lush green ambiance on the West Coast! Steps from our home is a beautiful lake for water activities such as open-water swimming, sunbathing, paddle boarding, etc. We live near multiple bus stops and a local subway station that allows you to quickly get around the city while walking distance from plenty of local cafes and more near our home.

Our house is perfectly set up for you to have your own space – your own room, kitchen, bathroom, laundry, family room, and plenty of windows.

We hope to find someone who is okay with a schedule but adaptable as things and opportunities arise. My husband and I enjoy going out to dinner occasionally or being more active on weekends, such as snowboarding. We would need you to help occasionally in the evening or on the weekends to care for our child. We are looking for someone who is welcome to join us for dinners and various outings such as camping, hiking, and going to the park but someone who is also independent and likes to have their own free time. There is so much to do in Seattle, and we want you to have opportunities to experience it during your time here.

My husband is employed by a local technology company, working from home mostly, but goes into the office a couple of times a month. His hours are typically 8:30 am-5:30pm, but those are very flexible and may be adjusted once our child is born. I will be looking for a new job a few months after our child is born. My hours will be similar once I reenter the workforce. Until then, I will be the primary care provider for our child until your arrival.

We will occasionally travel and would be interested in having someone willing to travel with us. This includes visiting our family in California, DC or simply going on vacation somewhere.

We will do our best to make you feel part of the family. All we ask is for you to be open and honest with us and care for our child as if it were your own. We look forward to meeting you!

Best regards,
Allie and Tom
