How to Overcome the Language Barrier in Speaking?
Good job! You've got a handle on a foreign language – you've learned lots of useful words, nailed down all the grammar rules, and can follow native speakers. You can even read news and write short texts in that language. But, here's the thing – when it comes to talking on the spot, you hit a roadblock. Sounds like your situation?

There are many reasons why the language barrier is so hard to overcome. It could be the stress that makes you forget all the words, anxiety that makes you feel like you are not advanced enough, or fear of making mistakes that keeps you from speaking, even when you've got the perfect sentences in your head.

If you are eager to finally get rid of the language barrier and start speaking confidently in a foreign language, check out our tips!

Practice with fellow students

Is the fear of making mistakes holding you back from speaking a foreign language? Or maybe you're worried that native speakers won't get what you're saying or might chuckle at your attempts. If that's the case, here's a tip: start practicing with fellow language learners first instead of diving straight into conversations with native speakers. Look for a group of students learning the same language as you and plan some practice sessions. You can check if any language cafes are happening in your city.

The key to bursting through your language barrier is consistent practice. It might be less intimidating to practice with peers who are at a similar level. Think about it – everyone's in the same boat, making similar mistakes. It's like a safe space to learn. Once you tackle the nervousness that's holding you back, you'll feel more confident about talking to native speakers. Keep going!

Immerse yourself and repeat out loud

Immerse yourself in the foreign language, and make it an inseparable part of your everyday life. Read books, catch up on news, scroll through social media, binge-watch series, and tune in to podcasts – all in the language you're learning. Now, here's the crucial part: say the sentences out loud that you read or hear. This helps your speech organ get used to the words, making it easier to remember and say them again later.

Our brain and tongue are like muscles, and just like any muscle, they need regular exercise! If you only read a sentence in your head or quickly listen to it, your brain might not remember it well. But if you say the sentence out loud, the chances of remembering it and using it in the future shoot up! So, speak up and let that language become a natural part of your daily routine!

Jump in at the deep end

As intimidating as it sounds, giving yourself no other choice but to speak the other language is an excellent way to break through the language barrier. By jumping in at the deep end we mean going abroad and immersing yourself in a social circle that speaks only the language you're studying. We will not fool you - the start can be tough. You might face challenges, feel stressed, and get frustrated when your thoughts don't come out right. But here's the thing – give it some time. Day by day, week by week, you'll notice it gets much easier! Trust us, it'll happen.

A great way to do so is to take part in some international cultural programs. Becoming an Au Pair abroad can be extremely beneficial: living in the same house with a Host Family will push you to start speaking right away! Experiences like volunteering abroad or going for a student exchange will also do the work, but make sure to interact with the locals, not just fellow internationals. If you head to Spain to conquer the Spanish language, speaking English with other international friends all the time won't do the trick. So, are you ready to jump in at the deep end?

Ready to start speaking?

Overcoming the language barrier is not a piece of cake. It'll definitely take time to confidently speak a foreign language, but with our handy tips, we're confident you'll be a step closer. Best of luck on your language adventure!
