Why should Kids play Sports?
Mankind has been practicing sports forever, either for entertainment or as an obligation. The truth is that nowadays the routines of our daily lives do not provide us with much time to exercise. However, doing sport is very important, especially in the case of children, who are still developing and who can improve their mental and physical health while having fun. If you are working as an Au Pair, we advise you to include sports with the children in your weekly schedule. In the following article, you can discover some of the benefits of sports for children (as well as for adults). 

Health benefits

This is perhaps the first aspect that comes to mind. The human body needs to be moved and sports are one of the best and most effective ways to do it. At least one hour of sport a day is the recommended length for children. Obviously, if they exercise more, it is even better. Since they are still developing some health precautions should be taken. In this way, diseases such as diabetes or overweight can be prevented. It also helps to prevent bad body posture and, more importantly, to create good physical and mental conditions for the future. 

Everyone benefits from it

Children have a lot of energy and a good way to channel it is through sport. By moving a lot during the day, they will have a healthy sleep routine at night.
 
Besides, while they practice sports, you could join them. If you play with them, even if you don't do it with great intensity, you'll be doing sports too. In addition, you'll be having fun together. What more could you ask for?

Meeting new people

It's one of the best ways to meet people. Sport brings people together. It makes them share emotions of victory and defeat. While exercising, tensions are released and a more relaxed atmosphere is created. Even for adults, often it would be much more beneficial to exercise together than just meeting for a drink. Often conversations don't flow and the best option to connect would be playing something or moving together.
 
In the case of children, it is also about facing new situations. A good way for shy children to open up is by playing sports when there is a much more relaxed atmosphere than in other situations. 

It teaches values 

Through sports, you learn to follow rules and regulations. It is not only important for sports but also for day-to-day life and your future. In any case, this is useful for the long term. In addition, a high-five or a word of encouragement are gestures that show a person's values and character. One of the perfect places to put them into practice is while playing sports.

When you practice sport you don't even look at the time

This has both positive and negative aspects. On one hand, kids tend to get bored when they do the same activity for too long. This does not happen with sports. Kids are occupied for a long time and enjoy it.
On the other hand, you should also pay attention to the time. There is the risk that you´ll also be so engaged that you will forget about other tasks.
Consequently, you should always plan your activities. It is beneficial for you, as an Au Pair, so they don´t forget about your schedule and it will become a special moment for the Host Kid.

A huge variety

If you or the Au Pair children don't like a specific sport, no problem. You can try another one. Many times we tend to think only of the most famous sports, for example, soccer, basketball, tennis, or swimming. However, there are many more that can be even more entertaining than the most famous ones. It's just a matter of research and being open to all possibilities - you can even invent your own sport! How about trying rugby for more muscular strength? Or joining a Hip Hop dance class if you or the children enjoy moving your body to music?
 

What's the alternative?

More and more children are getting used to simply playing with the game console or cell phone. Unless they go to some sports activity, they move little for the rest of the day. In this situation, playing sports is a great idea. In any case, it does not mean that playing console games should be forbidden. You can do it but in moderation and alternating with other activities. There will be plenty of time for it, especially when the weather is not nice. Moreover, you can keep yourself busy with, for example, painting, baking, playing with Lego, etc! If it is sunny, it is even more obligatory to go outside to exercise. There is no excuse for not going out to run or play with the ball. Not only for health reasons but also to be able to make friends and have a great time. Just pick a sport you would like to try and enjoy!
