Au Pair in Sweden: salary, working hours, holidays, etc.

Au Pair in Sweden pocket money
The Au Pair program in Sweden has its own official regulations. They will help you to understand better how it’s going to feel to be part of this adventure.

In general, the participant becomes a temporary family member. The concept of the Au Pair program is to create a life-long friendly relationship between the Au Pair and the Host Family. Nonetheless, in most of the countries the Au Pair program has strict rules that should be respected by all participants.

Au Pair duties in Sweden

The Au Pair should take care of the host’s children and should pick up most of the child care-related tasks, like:
  • Picking up the kids from school
  • Cleaning the kids’ room
  • Preparing some afternoon snacks for them
  • Walking them home from school
  • Playing with them
  • Reading a bedtime story
These tasks are the main responsibilities of the Au Pair. Is there anything else?

Yes. The Au Pair is about to become a new member of a family, so she/he may be asked to contribute in the general household chores just like everybody else in the family.

Host Family’s duties in Sweden

The Host Family needs to provide the Au Pair with:
  • Accommodation - the participant needs a private room
  • At least 3 full meals per day - the Au Pair should enjoy the meals with the Host Family
  • Pocket money, in an amount corresponding with the host country’s legislation
The family should support their new member and allow her/him to attend the language course, providing the participant with the suitable way of transportation and flexible schedule. Bear in mind the the participant is not an employee!

Working hours

The participant’s working hours should not exceed 30 hours per week and 5 hours per day. The Au Pair should also have the time to attend the language course.

Pocket money in Sweden

Participants in Sweden should receive ca. 3500 SEK per month, but from this amount (as well as from non-monetary taxable benefits) they have to pay income taxes.

Time-off and holidays

The Au Pair should have at least one day off in a week. The working hours per day should not exceed 5 hours, although this time will be most likely flexible.

There is no official regulation in Sweden concerning the Au Pair’s holiday, but it’s recommended to grant the participant 4 weeks of paid holidays for a stay of 12 months.

Accommodation

The Au Pair must get a private, comfortable room at the Host Family’s house and access to the rest of the place. Also full board should be granted (minimum 3 full meals per day). The participant does not have to pay for his/her food!

Nonetheless, the participants will have to pay the income tax on the board, lodging as well as the pocket money.

Language course

The participant in Sweden must attend the Swedish language course. The courses in Sweden are usually funded by the state, therefore they are usually free of charge.

The schedule must allow the participant to attend the language classes, which should take ca. 15 hours per week. Participants who need to apply for a work / residence permit will have to include the proof of enrollment in the language course with the visa application

Travel cost

The Host Family in Sweden is not in charge of paying for the travel expenses of the participant.

Both parties should discuss this matter and if the Host Family decides to help with the travel expenses, it should be done in instalments, month by month during the Au Pair’s stay.

What else?

  • The Au Pair program in Sweden cannot last more than 12 months (usually it is 9 - 12 months)
  • The participant in Sweden must register with the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) upon arrival and pay income taxes estimated on the value of pocket money and non-monetary taxable benefits (accommodation and full-board)
